During its worldwide premiere at Cannes on Thursday night, Payal Kapadia's film All We Imagine As Light captivated the attention of international critics. Given that Payal is the first Indian film to be selected for the festival's competitive section in thirty years, it is being seen as a potential Palme d'Or winner.

All We Imagine As Light had a positive reception from international reviewers
on its world premiere at Cannes on Thursday night. The film received an
eight-minute standing ovation after its screening, making it one of the longest
of the festival this year.
On May 25, Payal Kapadia and the team will be watching to see who takes home the Palme d'Or. Strong European rivals like Jacques Audiard and Yorgos Lanthimos, well-known American auteurs David Cronenberg and Paul Schrader, and avant-garde Asian director Jia Zhangke are their rivals.
This is the first Indian film to compete in thirty years for the prestigious Palme d'Or at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. Three years earlier, at the Cannes Film Festival, Kapadia had won the Le Prix du documentaire for Best Documentary with A Night of Knowing Nothing. This is her first effort at a feature film, titled All We Imagine As Light.
Addressing a daily, Kapadia stated, "India is a country that makes a lot of good films. Not just Bollywood but every state has its industry and there are absolutely brilliant filmmakers. I hope that after this, we won’t have to wait another 30 years."
All we can imagine as lights are the stars Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam, and Hridhu Haroon. The plot synopsis states that Nurse Prabha's unexpected present from her separated spouse throws her Mumbai routine for a loop. Her younger roommate, Anu, finds it difficult to get time to herself in the city so that she may also spend quality time with her boyfriend. They can go to a beach town and get what they want in a quiet atmosphere.
