๐ŸŽญ Early Life & Cinematic Journey

Born into an intellectually rich environment in Thiruvananthapuram, Priyadarshan was raised by a college librarian father who instilled in him a deep love for literature. During his university years, he wrote short plays for All India Radio and forged lifelong friendships with future industry stalwarts, including superstar Mohanlal, producer Suresh Kumar, and singer M.G. Sreekumar.

He made his directorial debut in 1984 with the low-budget Malayalam comedy Poochakkoru Mookkuthi. The movie became a massive box-office hit, establishing the slapstick genre in Kerala and marking the start of a legendary directorial journey.

๐ŸŽฌ Career Evolution: From Malayalam Master to Bollywood King

1. The Golden Era of Malayalam Cinema (1980s–1990s)

Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, Priyadarshan redefined commercial Malayalam cinema alongside Mohanlal. Classics like Boeing Boeing (1985), Thalavattam (1986), Chithram (1988), and Kilukkam (1991) shattered box-office records while balancing comedy with emotional depth.

He showcased his grand directorial vision with the period drama Kaalapani (1996), a visual masterpiece set in the Andaman Cellular Jail during British rule.

2. Revolutionizing Hindi Comedy (2000s)

Priyadarshan made his Hindi debut with Gardish (1993) and Virasat (1997), but it was Hera Pheri (2000) that reshaped modern Hindi pop culture. By steering away from over-the-top heroics and focusing on relatable, flawed characters driven by situational poverty, he created a gold standard for comedy in Bollywood.

He followed this success with a streak of comedy hits:

  • Hungama (2003) & Hulchul (2004)

  • Garam Masala (2005) & Bhagam Bhag (2006)

  • Chup Chup Ke (2006) & De Dana Dan (2009)

  • Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007): A psychological horror-comedy that grew into a iconic Hindi film franchise.

3. Critical Acclaim & National Awards

While famous for mainstream comedies, Priyadarshan's most decorated work lies in art-house and social drama cinema:

  • Kanchivaram (2008): A depiction of silk weavers in Tamil Nadu during the pre-independence era, winning him the National Film Award for Best Feature Film.

  • Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea (2021): A Malayalam historical epic that won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film.

  • Cricket Career Cut Short: Before pursuing filmmaking, Priyadarshan was an aspiring cricketer who captained his college team. His dreams of playing professionally ended after a severe left-eye injury caused by a cricket ball.

  • The Pioneer of Climax Chases: His trademark directorial trope is the chaotic, ensemble climax chase where almost every character in the movie converges at a single location—a signature seen in Hera Pheri, Hungama, De Dana Dan, and Kilukkam.

  • Visual Aesthetic Focus: Priyadarshan was among the early directors in South Indian cinema to prioritize rich, vivid cinematography, inspired heavily by Hollywood auteur David Lean.

  • Miss World Event Director: In 1996, Priyadarshan was selected to direct the official stage event and global broadcast for the Miss World pageant held in Bangalore, India.

Bollywood’s Big Reunion: Haiwaan with Priyadarshan, Akshay and Saif!

Bollywood's Big Reunion: Haiwaan with Priyadarshan, Akshay and Saif!

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India – The buzz is undeniable! After a significant gap of 17 years, Bollywood titans Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan are set to light up the silver screen together once more in an upcoming thriller titled 'Haiwaan'. This highly anticipated collaboration, under the masterful direction of Priyadarshan, is confirmed to commence shooting in August 2025, with a grand theatrical release slated for 2026.

This reunion marks a momentous occasion for Hindi cinema enthusiasts, who have long cherished the dynamic on-screen chemistry of Akshay and Saif. Their last joint venture was the 2008 action-comedy Tashan, following a string of successful partnerships in the 1990s like Main Khiladi Tu Anari (1994) and Yeh Dillagi (1994). 'Haiwaan' promises to showcase a fresh, intense facet of their camaraderie.

'Haiwaan': A Title That Promises Edge-of-the-Seat Thrills

The film's intriguing title, 'Haiwaan', which translates to 'beast' in English, is already generating significant curiosity. Industry sources indicate that this title was a unanimous choice, perfectly encapsulating the essence of the film. "The team felt this describes their subject the best, and conveys exactly how Priyadarshan sees it – as an edge-of-the-seat thriller," a source revealed. This choice hints at a dark, gripping narrative, suggesting complex and potentially morally ambiguous roles for both leading actors.

Priyadarshan's Vision: A Return to Gripping Suspense

Priyadarshan, celebrated for his comedic blockbusters, possesses an equally strong command over the thriller genre. His filmography includes critically acclaimed suspense dramas like Gardish and Virasat. 'Haiwaan' will see the veteran director returning to his roots in creating nail-biting narratives.

Adding to the excitement, reports strongly suggest that 'Haiwaan' is the official Hindi remake of Priyadarshan's own highly successful 2016 Malayalam thriller, Oppam, which starred the versatile Mohanlal. Oppam revolved around a visually impaired protagonist embroiled in a murder mystery, a premise ripe for a compelling Bollywood adaptation. Intriguingly, some initial reports have hinted at Akshay Kumar potentially essaying the role of the antagonist in this version, setting the stage for a powerful face-off with Saif Ali Khan. While the exact roles are yet to be officially confirmed, this possibility further heightens the anticipation.

The Undeniable Chemistry: Akshay and Saif's Evolution

Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan's previous collaborations were lauded for their effortless chemistry and strong performances across diverse genres. Both actors have significantly evolved in their craft over the past two decades. Akshay has become a master of versatility, delivering hits across action, comedy, and social dramas. Saif, on the other hand, has garnered immense critical acclaim for his nuanced, often intense, and character-driven roles. Their combined star power and mature acting prowess, under Priyadarshan's guidance, are expected to deliver a truly impactful cinematic experience.

Production Commences Soon for a 2026 Release

With the shoot scheduled to kick off in August 2025, the production of 'Haiwaan' is set to go into full swing in just a few weeks. The makers are targeting a 2026 theatrical release, building anticipation for one of the biggest Bollywood events of the year. Both Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan have busy professional commitments. Akshay recently wrapped another Priyadarshan directorial, Bhooth Bangla, and has Welcome to the Jungle and Hera Pheri 3 in his pipeline. Saif Ali Khan was recently seen in Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins and has several other projects on his schedule.

The reunion of this formidable trio – Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, and Priyadarshan – for 'Haiwaan' is undoubtedly a cinematic event to watch out for. Fans are eagerly awaiting more official announcements and glimpses into this promising thriller.

He recently stated that all initial hurdles and "fine-tuning" between the creative team, including Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, and director Priyadarshan, have been resolved. Suniel Shetty's Reassuring Update: "Log Sirf Hasne Hi Hasne Waale Hain"

Reacting to Paresh Rawal's confirmation, Suniel Shetty, who plays the beloved character of Shyam, shared his excitement and offered a reassuring glimpse into the film's core essence. During a recent interaction, Shetty expressed his happiness that the "fine-tuning" has been completed and hinted that the team is now fully focused on bringing the magic back to the big screen.

What truly resonated with fans was Shetty's promise about the film's nature. He emphasized that Hera Pheri 3 will stay true to its roots as a quintessential "family entertainer." He stated, "Ye family ki film hai. Shayad wo ek film jahaan aap sab milke ek saath dekh sakte ho. Agar ek baar aap TV chaalu kar dete ho to uske baad aapko tension lene ki zarurat nahi hai, sharmaane ki zarurat nahi hai. Aapko pata hai ki log sirf hasne hi hasne waale hain. Chhup ke TV ya mobile phone dekhne ki zarurat nahi hai. Parivaar se chhupa ke nahi. Waisi hi filmein hum banate hain."

(This is a family film. Perhaps it's one of those films that you can all watch together. Once you turn on the TV, you don't need to worry or feel embarrassed. You know people are just going to laugh and laugh. There's no need to watch it secretly on TV or your mobile phone. Nothing to hide from the family. These are the kinds of films we make.)

This statement from Suniel Shetty underscores the commitment of the team to deliver a wholesome, laugh-out-loud comedy that can be enjoyed by audiences of all ages, just like the iconic first two installments, Hera Pheri (2000) and Phir Hera Pheri (2006).

The Return of the Iconic Trio: Raju, Shyam, and Baburao

The return of the original trio – Akshay Kumar as Raju, Suniel Shetty as Shyam, and Paresh Rawal as Baburao – is undoubtedly the biggest draw for Hera Pheri 3. Abhishek Bachchan becomes Bachchan Singh now!

After being away from films for over a year, now Abhishek Bachchan is all set to be back in action with as good as six movies. The actor is told to have green lighted some astonishing projects, the official pronouncements of which will soon follow.

Fascinatingly, in three of his forthcoming movies, Abhishek essays a character blessed with special traits and superpowers!

As per a famous tabloid, Abhishek Bachchan plays a man who does everything left-handed in Prabhudheva's Lefty, he plays a man with bad temper in Sanak which he has scripted too and now in Bachchan Singh the actor plays a man who has superpowers. He is a paan-chewing corrupt cop, who suddenly discovers that he can get anything he wants only by clapping his hands.

Director Priyadarshan confirmed the same to a famous tabloid. He told, "We start shooting for the film from November this year. The film has been written by Rumi Jaffrey and produced by Rajat Rawail. It’s a fantasy fiction film, humorous, something along the lines of Mr India and The Mask."

He adds, "Before the interval, Abhishek plays a corrupt cop and then turns a saviour of sorts with powers. He has the power of clapping to get what he wants but he realises it later. It’s my first masala film. While we have tentatively called it Bachchan Singh, we may change the name later."

"My Tamil film is a rural human drama dealing with social issues and will start in June. After I complete that, we start Bachchan Singh in November," ends converstion Priyadarshan.

Abhishek Bachchan becomes Bachchan Singh now!

After being a part of multi-starrer movies, Abhishek Bachchan is all set to showcase his acting ability with solo lead roles in 2017.

Now been roped in for Lefty, Nishikant Kamat’s untitled next, Gulab Jamun and Ronnie Screwvala’s unnamed project, the 41-year-old actor has signed another movie with Priyadarshan.

As thrilling as the line-up sounds, the title of his next with Priyadarshan, in particular, has caught our fancy. Titled Bachchan Singh, the film will be produced by Suniel Shetty and Rajat Rawail.

Fascinatingly, this would be the second time Junior Bachchan’s surname has got any filmmaker hooked. Previously, Rohit Shetty’s directorial Bol Bachchan (2012) also had the actor’s second name in the title and was, in fact, a hit at the box office.

Abhishek was last seen in Housefull 3 (2016) that also had Akshay Kumar, Ritesh Deshmukh, Jacqueline Fernandez, Lisa Haydon and Nargis Fakhri in lead roles.
