Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari Review: Nostalgia, Sequins, and the Search for Sanskar!

Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari Review: Nostalgia, Sequins, and the Search for Sanskar!

Director Shashank Khaitan has always been the architect of modern Bollywood romance, giving us hits like Humpty Sharma and Badrinath Ki Dulhania. With Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari (SSKTK), he attempts to bottle that signature Dharma Productions magic again, pairing Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor in a sprawling, colourful festive drama.

The result is less a flawless romance and more a gorgeous wedding album where the photos are perfect, but the vows feel rehearsed.

The SSKTK Report Card: Where it Soars and Where it Stumbles

 Assessment

  The Verdict

Star Power & Chemistry

A+

The only reason to buy the ticket. Varun Dhawan is back in his best form—charming, goofy, and utterly believable as the lovable mess, Sunny. His comic timing is flawless and he anchors the chaos. Janhvi Kapoor is vibrant and shares a credible, sparkling rapport with him, proving this pairing has potential beyond Bawaal.

Visuals & Music

A

SSKTK is an absolute spectacle. Everything is lavish, bright, and expensive—a true hallmark of Dharma Productions. The songs ("Panwaadi" is a standout) are instantly infectious and the scale ensures it feels like a big-screen event.

The Core Story (The 'Sanskar')

C-

This is where the film falters. The plot—two exes (Sunny and Tulsi) faking a relationship to win back their respective former partners (Sanya Malhotra and Rohit Saraf)—is recycled. Khaitan leans too heavily on established tropes, resulting in a first half that feels fun but a second half that is rushed, predictable, and emotionally hollow. The attempts at social messaging are drowned out by the excessive glamour.

The Missing Heart of the Rom-Com

The true innovation in romantic comedy isn't new clothes; it's a new conflict. SSKTK spends too much time orchestrating misunderstandings and not enough time making us invest in Sunny and Tulsi's genuine connection.

The film operates on pure adrenaline and Varun Dhawan's sheer likability. He is the life support for a script that often runs on fumes. While supporting players Sanya Malhotra and Rohit Saraf are competent, they are sidelined by the convoluted premise, preventing the "quadrangle" from ever feeling truly high-stakes.

Is it worth watching?

Yes, if you view it as a celebratory, guilt-free slice of classic Bollywood escapism. SSKTK succeeds as a highly polished, energetic family entertainer perfect for the holidays. Just keep your critical expectations low and enjoy the spectacle.

The Final Grade: A Solid, Yet Forgettable, Three-Star Wedding.

Shashank Khaitan Clears Air: Why Alia was Not in Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari!

Shashank Khaitan Clears Air: Why Alia was Not in Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari!

Myth Busted: Shashank Khaitan on Why Alia Bhatt's Casting in 'Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari' Was Never on the Cards

The cinematic universe created by director ShashankKhaitan—characterized by vibrant romances, family drama, and the undeniable chemistry of Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt—led to one of Bollywood’s most stubborn rumors: that Alia was the original choice for the female lead in 'Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari' (SSKTK).

Given the runaway success of the Humpty Sharma and Badrinath Ki Dulhania films, the industry and fans alike were quick to assume the iconic trio would reunite for this latest project. However, Khaitan has finally offered a nuanced, business-minded perspective, effectively shattering the AliaBhatt casting myth and clarifying why Janhvi Kapoor was the destined Tulsi Kumari.

Myth vs. Reality: The Truth Behind the SSKTK Casting

The Myth: Alia Bhatt, being Shashank Khaitan's original muse and Varun Dhawan's perfect on-screen partner, was approached first to play 'Tulsi Kumari,' but declined, leading to Janhvi Kapoor replacing her.

The Reality: Shashank Khaitan confirmed that the role was never offered to Alia, not due to creative differences, but due to a clear professional reality.

"The film was always conceived as 'Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari'," Khaitan revealed. "I knew that Alia Bhatt was simply not free for the next two or three years. Her schedule was completely blocked, making it impossible to align with our production timelines. We are great friends and talk about ideas, but this particular role was never on her table."

This revelation underscores that the casting process for SSKTK was a logistical, forward-looking decision rather than a dramatic last-minute pivot. Khaitan and the producers recognized the need for a talented actress who could commit to the film’s schedule.

The New Pairing: Khaitan Builds the Janhvi Kapoor Legacy

By clarifying the Alia Bhatt casting truth, Khaitan shifts the focus onto his excitement for the new dynamic between Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor.

Khaitan, who previously directed Janhvi in her impactful debut Dhadak, explained his choice to bring her into the major commercial space: "I know Janhvi’s potential for comedy and commercial cinema, which hasn't been fully explored yet. This character and this film were built to showcase that side of her talent."

This move establishes a new director-actress collaboration in the Dharma camp, suggesting that Khaitan is actively moving beyond the 'Dulhania' template to forge fresh on-screen partnerships. The pairing of Varun's high-energy comedy with Janhvi's developing commercial charisma ensures that while the Shashank Khaitan universe feels familiar, the chemistry remains novel.

The transparency from the director finally clears the air, allowing audiences to anticipate the new film without the shadow of persistent casting speculation, and celebrate the arrival of the new Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor pairing.

Now NO Dulhania for Shashank Khaitan and Varun Dhawan!

We were all excited when Shashank Khaitan and Varun Dhawan said they were reteaming for a third time after the Dulhania films for a spy thriller.

That’s why it makes me very sad to tell you that the action entertainer has been put on the backburner. In Shashank’s own words, he had cracked a great first half for the screenplay but ran out of ideas for the second half, so he’s decided to put it on hold until he comes up with an amazing third act. I’ll let you know if and when inspiration strikes him!

No direction of Shashank Khaitan for Aashiqui 3!

After the enormous success of Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapoor's Aashiqui 2, the third installment of the movie Aashiqui 3 is perhaps one of the most awaited movies. The movie has been in news for quite some time now. But, no official confirmation has been made as yet which has left space for several speculations.

Now, the rumor mills were abuzz with the rumors of Karan Johar and Mahesh Bhatt coming together for Aashiqui 3 and also suggested that Badrinath Ki Dulhania's director Shashank Khaitan will be directing the movie.

When we communicated Mahesh Bhatt to confirm the reports, he dismissed it telling that none of this is true.

News of Shashank directing the movie started doing the rounds when Alia and Shashank were spotted together outside Mahesh Bhatt's office lately.

When we asked the filmmaker if rumours of Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra finally doing the film are true, he nonchalantly replied telling, "Rumours, Rumours, Rumours."

Previously talking about Aashiqui 3, Sidharth had told, "I am in talks for 'Aashiqui 3' with Alia Bhatt, but nothing has been confirmed."

Alia's sister Shaheen Bhatt is also co-writing the script. If reports are to be believed, Alia will be seen playing the role of a singer in the third franchise.

Previously, Mahesh Bhatt had gone on record to say that the duo is far from officially signing the movie. "I don't think you can say that they are anyway official close to putting their pen on paper to say yes to that (film). It is an incorrect assumption to say that they are a part of Aashiqui 3," he had told.
