The Royals (2025 Indian TV Series) - A Modern Royal Rom-Com!

The Royals (2025 Indian TV Series) - A Modern Royal Rom-Com!

"The Royals" is a Hindi-language romantic comedy-drama web series that premiered on Netflix on May 9, 2025. Created by Rangita Pritish Nandy and Ishita Pritish Nandy, and directed by Priyanka Ghose and Nupur Asthana, the 8-episode series offers a contemporary take on the lives of a financially struggling royal family in India.

Plot:

The narrative centers around the royal family of Morpur, whose fortunes have dwindled in modern times. Their ancestral palace, once a symbol of grandeur, is now a financial burden. An unexpected turn of events occurs when the young and somewhat entitled heir, Yuvaraj Aviraaj "Fizzy" Singh (Ishaan Khatter), reluctantly teams up with a determined and ambitious hospitality entrepreneur from Mumbai, Sophia Kanmani Shekhar (Bhumi Pednekar).

Sophia proposes a unique business venture: to revive the Motibagh Palace as a luxury "Royal B&B," allowing commoners to experience royal life firsthand and providing the much-needed income for the family. This collaboration brings together two contrasting worlds – the traditional opulence of royalty and the fast-paced, pragmatic world of a startup.

As Fizzy and Sophia work together, their initial clashes due to their starkly different backgrounds gradually give way to an undeniable romantic connection. However, their budding romance is complicated by their individual pasts, with the return of Sophia's ex, Kunal (Udit Arora), and Fizzy's ex, Ayesha (Nora Fatehi).

The series also explores the dynamics within the royal family, including the matriarch Rajmata Maji Saheba Bhagyashree Devi (Zeenat Aman), Fizzy's mother Maharani Padmaja "Paddy" Singh (Sakshi Tanwar) who is grappling with the loss of her husband and the family's financial woes, and his siblings Yuvaraj Digvijay "Diggy" Singh (Vihaan Samat) and Yuvarani Divyaranjini "Jinnie" Singh (Kavya Trehan). The traditional expectations for a royal marriage to secure their future also add another layer of conflict.

Cast:

The series features an ensemble cast:

  • Ishaan Khatter as Yuvaraj Aviraaj "Fizzy" Singh
  • Bhumi Pednekar as Sophia Kanmani Shekhar
  • Zeenat Aman as Rajmata Maji Saheba Bhagyashree Devi
  • Sakshi Tanwar as Maharani Padmaja "Paddy" Singh

  • Shweta Salve as Sameera Kashyap
  • Yashaswini Dayama as Molshri Mittal
  • Shivani Tanksale as Rambha
  • Neena Kulkarni as Sophia's grandmother
  • Jagdish Rajpurohit as Girdhari

Release and Reception:

"The Royals" premiered on Netflix on May 9, 2025. The series has received mixed reviews from critics. While the production design and the chemistry between the lead actors, Ishaan Khatter and Bhumi Pednekar, have been praised, the writing and narrative depth have faced criticism for lacking originality and emotional resonance. Some reviews noted the series as a "fun rom-com" with a blend of Bollywood elements and a period-drama sensibility, while others found it creatively lacking despite its talented cast.

Soundtrack:

The soundtrack for "The Royals" was released on May 5, 2025, and features a recreated version of the iconic song "Tu Tu Hai Wahi" from the 1982 film Yeh Vaada Raha, sung by various artists.

"The Royals" offers a light-hearted and visually appealing take on the collision of traditional royalty and modern entrepreneurship, with a central romantic track playing out against the backdrop of palace intrigue and family dynamics.

Ekta Kapoor encounters with two TV stalwarts!

The Queen of TV, Ekta Kapoor's reunion with her super powerful females, Smriti Irani and Sakshi Tanwar aka Tulsi and Parvati just got us tremendously nostalgic.

Lately Ekta posted a snap of herself with her Tulsi and Parvati in the frame.

She captioned it as, "Two stalwarts! D twains meet in Delhi."

90's kids will assuredly agree when we say, how every household was stuck to TV screens from 10pm-11pm on Star plus from Monday-Thursday just to religiously wacth Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki, irrespective of what's happening in one's life.

This was the time when audiences get agitated on seeing a Mihir betrays Tulsi for Mandira or Pallavi trying to create troubles in the life of Parvati.

Out of the TV world, while Ekta has sustained her reputation of being the queen of Indain TV, Parvati aka Sakshi is creating Dangal in Bollywood and on the web front, while Tulsi who once ruled the TV world, has gone a long way of ruling the textile industry of the country.

It’s a web series Karrle Tu Bhi Mohabbat’s launching time!

TV stars Sakshi Tanwar and Ram Kapoor are seen here at the launch of their web series, Karrle Tu Bhi Mohabbat, which will be aired on Ekta Kapoor's forthcoming digital app ALTBalaji. Fresh from the success of her roles like Daya Kaur in hit movie Dangal and Shibani Malik in TV series 24: Season 2, Sakshi is now gearing up for her maiden web-series.

"Now I am at that stage of my life where I want to experiment as much as I can with the kind of roles that are being offered to me," Sakshi told the media. "Shibani Malik in 24 was a character that I have enjoyed the most because that gave me one shade to explore ... shows like 24 are happening and are trying to focus on varied range of subjects," she further added.

Sakshi told she signed up for "Karrle Tu Bhi Mohabbat" even before the release of Dangal. "I had already made the commitment. I have never done more than one thing at a time and I have taken gaps in between. After Kahaani..., I took a three-year break. Similarly, I did after Bade Achhe Lagte Hain.

"Honestly, now I am on my break period, but because this was a prior commitment, I am doing it. Yes, there are offers which I am considering, but after Dangal I don't want to do something which can dilute that effect. I am happy to maintain that for the time being," she told.

In Karrle Tu Bhi Mohabbat, Sakshi has been paired with her Bade Achhe Lagte Hain co-star Ram Kapoor. Asked about their on screen chemistry, Ram told, "I honestly believe that there are two things that are needed for any couple to work whether it is Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol or others - they both have to be very good at what they do and they have to be comfortable with each other.”

Sakshi told the fact that they are different people in real translates well on screen.
"Not only the characters that we have portrayed, but the people that Ram and I are we are poles apart. We think differently. So, that translates very well into the characters that we have been given to portray. It's that typical thing that you see in our show opposites attract," Sakshi told.

Also seen here are Ekta Kapoor, Nimrat Kaur and Rajkummar Rao among others.

She earned fame for her character Parvati Agarwal of the popular Balaji telefilms TV series "Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki" and later as Priya Ram Kapoor on another TV series "Bade Achhe Lagte Hain."

The movie "Dangal" celebrates gender equality.

The tale of the movie revolves around the journey of two wrestling champions Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari, played by Fatima Sana Sheikh and Sanya Malhotra.

Speaking about her equation with them, Sakshi told, "All the four girls -- Zaira (Zaira Wasim who plays young Geeta), Suhani (Suhani Bhatnagar who plays young Babita), Fatima and Sanya are amazing, they are rockstars of our film. They are tremendously talented performers."

The promo of Aamir Khan's much-awaited movie Dangal, which is based on the life of Haryanvi wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters, was uncovered recently and we just can't get enough of it!

The trailer throws light on the story of Phogat, a former wrestler, who longs for a son who can carry his legacy forward and win the gold medal in wrestling for the nation. But, much to his dissatisfaction, Phogat is blessed with daughters.
