Poonam Dhillon is a legendary figure in Indian cinema, known for her transition from a teenage beauty queen to one of the most beloved actresses of the 1980s. With a career spanning over four decades, she has left an indelible mark on film, television, and theatre.

Early Life and Education

Born on April 18, 1962 (some sources cite 1961), in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, Poonam Dhillon grew up in an academic environment. Her father, Amreek Singh, was an aeronautical engineer in the Indian Air Force, and her mother was a school principal. Despite her eventual stardom, she was a studious child who originally aspired to become a doctor. She attended Carmel Convent School in Chandigarh and later completed her graduation in Political Science and Economics while already working in films.

The Big Break

At just 16 years old, Poonam won the Miss Young India title (1978). Her victory caught the eye of legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra, who cast her in the blockbuster Trishul (1978). Her song "Gapoochi Gapoochi Gum Gum" became an instant hit, paving the way for her lead role in the iconic film Noorie (1979).

Career Evolution and Business Ventures

Beyond acting, Poonam is a pioneer in the industry. In 1991, she launched "Vanity," the first make-up van business in the Indian film industry. She has also been active in social causes, serving as a cultural ambassador and an advocate for drug and AIDS awareness. Today, she serves as the president of CINTAA (Cine and Television Artists Association).

After launching star kids like Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor in Bollywood, now Sanjay Leela Bhansali is launching Poonam Dhillon and Ashok Thakeria's son Anmol Thakeria. There were conjectures doing the rounds last year about the same. The tentative title of the movie is Tuesdays And Fridays.

A media source has verified that the movie has already gone on floors. The source revealed, “Sanjay Leela Bhansali is giving a big launch pad to Poonam Dhillon and Ashok Thakeria's son Anmol Thakeria - his dream Bollywood debut. They are shooting for the film in London. As far as the leading lady is concerned, they are still figuring it out. Sanjay Leela Bhansali is soon planning to launch him with a big announcement.”
