The Buckingham Murders Review: A Gripping Thriller That Keeps You Guessing!

The Buckingham Murders Review: A Gripping Thriller That Keeps You Guessing!

Hansal Mehta's latest film,
The Buckingham Murders, is a suspenseful and thought-provoking thriller that keeps you guessing until the very end.

Set against the backdrop of the 2022 Leicester Hindu-Muslim unrest, the film follows a grieving detective, played brilliantly by Kareena Kapoor, who is tasked with investigating the mysterious disappearance of a young child in Buckinghamshire.

About Performances:

Kareena Kapoor Khan delivers a powerful performance as the lead, a detective haunted by the loss of her own child. Her nuanced portrayal of a woman struggling to balance her grief with the demands of her job is both compelling and heartbreaking.

The supporting cast, including Ranveer Brar, Vijay Varma, and Radhika Apte, provide strong performances that elevate the film. Their characters add depth and complexity to the narrative, making it more than just a murder mystery.

What works:

  • Strong performances: Kapoor delivers a nuanced performance, capturing the emotional turmoil of a woman grappling with personal tragedy. Ranveer Brar, in a surprising turn, shines as a complex and compelling character.
  • Gripping narrative: The film's plot is well-paced and full of twists and turns that keep the audience engaged. The exploration of themes of grief, guilt, and the complexities of human nature adds depth to the story.
  • Atmospheric cinematography: The film's visuals are stunning, capturing the beauty and intrigue of the English countryside.

What doesn't:

  • Slow pacing: While the slow burn approach adds to the suspense, some viewers may find the pacing a bit deliberate.
  • Predictable plot: While the film offers a few surprises, the overall plot structure may feel familiar to fans of the genre.

The film's pacing is well-executed, building tension gradually and keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. The twists and turns in the plot are both unexpected and satisfying, and the film's exploration of themes such as grief, loss, and the complexities of human nature is thought-provoking.

While some viewers may find the film's pace to be slow at times, it's a deliberate choice that allows the characters and their motivations to develop fully. The film's ending is both satisfying and bittersweet, leaving a lasting impression.

Mehta's direction is assured and confident, creating a tense atmosphere that is both suspenseful and thought-provoking. The film's pacing is well-balanced, with moments of quiet reflection interspersed with thrilling action sequences. The cinematography is stunning, capturing the beauty of the English countryside while also creating a sense of foreboding.

Overall, The Buckingham Murders is a well-crafted thriller that offers a compelling story and strong performances. It's a must-watch for fans of the genre and those looking for a thought-provoking film.

I salute her fearlessness, reveals Hansal Mehta on Kangana!

Director Hansal Mehta salutes the fearlessness of his "Simran" actress Kangana Ranaut, and tells he would love to work with the "one-of-a-kind" artiste again.

Mehta opened up about the hullabaloos surrounding his reported 'stormy' collaboration with Kangana and about "Simran".

“Kangana has collaborated closely on the film and I have always seen that with a lot of positivity. There is a lot her contribution has lent to the final film and I would rather celebrate that than respond to insinuations and hearsay. After having spent 20 years making many different kinds of films, I feel I don't need to clarify this matter any further as it gives unnecessary attention to people who thrive on spreading malice.”, he revealed.

He further added, “Kangana is a very fine artiste and one of the best actors we have today. If I have a subject that both of us agree upon, I would love to work with her. We know each other and our respective working styles well enough and there is no reason to not continue making films together whenever the opportunity arises.”

He later added, “I've said before that she answered the questions that were asked of her. She answered those questions unflinchingly and I salute her fearlessness. She is one of a kind and we should celebrate that. I wish the wise persons who raised these questions about her personal life would also be asked the same thing - did they have nothing else to ask her?”

Rajkummar Rao and I are a happy combination, says Hansal Mehta!

While one looks forward to a splendid performance by Manoj Bajpayee in Aligarh, it is pretty much on the cards that the Hansal Mehta film would turn out to be a classy affair, what with National Award winning actor Rajkummar Rao joining the proceedings. The actor has worked with Hansal in two movies before this, Shahid and Citylights, both of which won quite some critical acclaim for the subject matter, narrative and of course the acts.

With Hansal and Rajukummar coming together once more for Aligarh, guess this is one director-actor 'Jodi' which is for the keeps?

"Well, I am hoping and though people keep asking me about that, I don’t discuss it too much," says Hansal, "We are a happy combination for sure; we are a family. One must keep the family growing and we share a certain comfort level. We challenge each other on a regular basis. I keep thinking about how to portray Rajkummar differently and he also takes up that challenge. So while I try to bring different things on the table, he too interprets my scripts quite beautifully."

No surprise, with three movies in a row for the director and the actor, it has come to a point where spoken words are no more a need while calling the shots.

"That's correct," agrees Hansal, "Sometimes I don't have to tell Rajkummar what to do and how to do. He knows when I really like a take or not like it. We have reached that point in life where we have developed a solid understanding. When you have that kind of an equation with someone, it results in something beautifully. Since it is working out so beautifully, why tamper with the combination."

With the film set for release this Friday, one looks forward to yet another hard hitting narrative by Hansal with some terrific act on display by Rajkummar Rao and of course Manoj Bajpayee.

Written by Apurva Asrani and produced by Karma Pictures & Eros International, Aligarh is based on the real life tale of Dr. Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras from Aligarh Muslim University who was sacked from his position on charges of homosexuality in 2010.

Hansal Mehta is hopeful about Aligarh's release!

Hansal Mehta is known for making hard hitting and influential movies. His movie Shahid won a national award and he is making yet another impactful movie. His movie Aligarh starring Manoj Bajpayee in the lead role wrapped up the shoot and will be released soon. The movie touches upon the controversial topic of homosexuality, where Manoj plays a professor who is caught having sex with one of his male students. Going by the recent diktat of the Censor Board, it doesn't seem likely that Aligarh would get the green signal from the board, but Mehta chooses to stay confident.

The Citylights film-maker hopes that the CBFC board will see beyond the controversial nature of the movie and instead support the sensitivity of the content. Mehta is self-confident that the current government is democratic and will not ban his movie, even though in the past several extremist outfits have protested against homosexuality depiction in movies.

Aligarh is based on a real life incident and also stars Rajkummar Rao.

Kangana to play Sarabjit's sister?

Hansal Mehta, the award winning director behind movies like Shahid and Citylights is working on yet another hard hitting movie - a biopic based on Indian Sarabjit Singh, who was convicted of spying and terrorism in a Pakistani court and eventually died when he was attacked by other prisoners in a Pakistani prison.

The movie will supposedly explore the relationship between Sarabjit and his sister Dalbir Kaur, who spent most of her life fighting to free her brother from jail. While the hunt is on for an actor to essay Sarabjit's role, we hear that Kangana has been approached for Dalbir's character in the movie. Kangana tells that she is very impressed by Hansal's script and can identify with the character as she herself has two siblings to whom she is very close. Sounds like another National award winning film and performance in the making.
