Raazi Review: Alia Bhatt’s impeccable act and distinctive plot as a spy thriller!

After well-known films like Filhaal, Just Married and Talvar, Meghna Gulzar’s next Raazi is a distinctive spy thriller and it deserves a place in a list of big innovative spy thrillers. It’s an espionage thriller packed with chilling twists and turns which masterfully narrates the fate of warring India and Pakistan and how a seemingly pliant Kashmiri college girl becomes one of the crucial reasons of a dramatic Indian victory in the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Harinder Sikka, the writer of the book Calling Sehmat on which Raazi is based, had written the story of a brave heart who went to great lengths for her country. His point was simple - Kashmiri Muslims be shown in the right light, for what they are, in most cases true Indians.

Set in 1971, film Raazi revolves around Delhi University student Sehmat Khan (Alia Bhatt), whose father (Rajit Kapoor), a veteran spy marries her off to Pakistani army officer Iqbal (Vicky Kaushal) on discovering that his days are numbered due to a lung tumour and that the Pakistani armed forces have some notorious plans for India. Sehmat, a soft-spoken and gentle girl, is trained by spymaster Mir (Jaideep Ahlawat) and wedded to Iqbal. Soon after the wedding, she embarks on her mission of spying for India and the difficulties and challenges she faces on this mission, forms the rest of the plot.

Alia Bhatt has proved her mettle again with her best performance as Sehmat. As Sehmat, Alia easily shifts between gentleness and deviousness. This is Alia’s one of the best performances. Vicky Kaushal’s dignified and gallant act as Pakistani Army officer Iqbal is noticeable. Jaideep Ahlawat also captivates in his spymaster act.  Veteran Soni Razdan is OK in her brief role.

Film Raazi’s plot is crisp and taut and edgy, it is not a fast-paced potboiler with car chases or gun battles or slick action sequences. But, Meghna succeeds to keep the audiences on the edge of their seats and that is precisely where Raazi proves to be a winner. Meghna also earns praise for keeping the plot restrained and dignified. Writer Bhavani Iyer and director Meghna Gulzar take the source material and weave magic. Raazi is praiseworthy for its novelty and creative quotients.

Film Sachin A Billion Dreams offers a heavy dose of the magnificent ’90s, an era in which the BCCI became the superpower of world cricket.

When the hero has been the collective voice and integrity of India’s cricketing history, then he’s a tough subject to make a movie on. Obviously, James Erskine puts Sachin on a pedestal and tells the story with an unnatural amount of respect.

It’s a treat to get a look into Sachin’s childhood. And it’s also a fan-shriek moment to see footage of him in his personal space, looped to Dire Straits and Bappi Lahiri with his wife Anjali, his children—Arjun and Sara, his family and friends. The fact that Sachin is the sutradhar (narrator) who walks the viewer through his victories and injuries is an additional bonus.

In India, where cricket is a religion and Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar is God, this movie aims to offer a sneak peek in the life of the ‘Little Master’ and seeks to show the man behind the legend.

The movie starts off with Sachin’s childhood and we get to know what a curly-haired little devil Tendulkar was as a kid. The story is peppered with anecdotes of his mischievousness as told by Sachin’s family members. The first half of the movie is nothing less than a ‘coming of age’ story as we follow Sachin’s life and learn how he transformed from a infamous mischief-monger to a dedicated sportsman with the help of his brother Ajit Tendulkar and his coach Ramakant Achrekar. The movie also sheds light on how he met his wife Anjali and how they ended up getting married and some of the anecdotes are bound to make you laugh. Through Anjali, we also get to know how Sachin is as a husband and a father and how his performance on the pitch tends to affect his personal life too. Sachin also takes us on a guided tour of the Indian cricket team and we get to know how the team functions within the limits of a dressing room, the friendship between the players and the effect a win or loss has on the entire team.

The movie has been shot fairly well and the background music by A.R. Rahman, is one of the highlights of the movie as it elevates the narrative to another level altogether. Every time the ‘Sachin... Sachin’ chant echoes through the cinema-hall, you feel goosebumps on your skin-such is the impact of the docu-drama.

James Erskine deserves praise for his stiff direction and for making the movie engaging enough to arrest the attention of every spectator in the cinema-hall. The movie is not just about Sachin, but about Indian cricket as a whole, with emphasis on the other members of the team and on the people behind Sachin, who made him what he is today.

Erskine’s movie also has included some of Sachin’s memorable matches and his tryst with captaincy and the reason behind his reluctance to wear the captain’s cap, which should shed some light on why Tendulkar never wanted the post. We also get hints of the dark world of match-fixing and how it affected the entire team. But what generally works for the movie is that it is not just about Sachin, the cricketer, but also Sachin as a person, as a father, as a husband and as a friend.

The biography’s narrative continues with commentators, critics and colleagues Dhoni, Kohli, Ganguly, Sehwag and Harbhajan are (sigh!) only praising the Little Master.

Overall, Sachin-A Billion Dreams is a praiseworthy film to watch once for Sachin’s fan and sports lovers.

Movie Review: Hindi Medium is praiseworthy to watch once for its entertaining satire and comic elements.

Movie Hindi Medium comes at a suitable time, and shines a light on the near-insurmountable barrier that language, the knowing of one, the not knowing of another, can be. As we see Chandni Chowk businessman Raj Batra and his wife Mita struggle to get their daughter into the best schools, where the parents have to pass the entrance to the nursery test first before anything else. Irrfan Khan delivers a fine performance in this film which puts the difference between Bharat and India in sharp focus. Pakistani actor Saba Qamar gets some moments too. Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan, mostly known for his edgy and intense acts, made us fall in love with him for his rib-tickling timing in Shoojit Sircar's Piku and the man is back to do the same again with his next Hindi Medium.

Film Hindi Medium is all about India's obsession with the English language. The story of Raj Batra (Khan) and his wife Meeta (Saba Qamar), a couple from Chandni Chowk, who want their daughter to study in a 'posh' school. When Raj and Meeta decide to get their daughter in one of the leading schools of South Delhi, their decision leads to a series to funny consequences as the family shifts to Vasant Vihar to be a part of the 'class crowd' and then to a humble home in order to get their daughter in the school through a quote reserved for the have-nots. How the couple manages to do this is what the movie is all about.

Irrfan, who has a great sense of humour, is too good in the movie and it's a sheer delight to see him as the Chandni Chowk ka 'jugaadu' businessman, who will lie, bribe, cheat and do whatever it takes to ensure that his daughter gets the best education possible. Pakistani actress Saba, who makes her Bollywood debut with this movie, is inspirational and has a decent sense of humour. The two actors have a great chemistry and their mockery is one of the highlights of the movie. Deepak Dobriyal has a small role, but the man yet manages to make you laugh and bring a lump to your throat with natural ease. Tillotma Shome and Amrita Singh, who too have small roles, manage to shine with their acts.

As for the movie, the first half is sincerely funny and manages to send across a message about our obsession with the English language without being too preachy about it. Serving a serious issue with a dose of humour is always a delicate affair, but Saket has done great job with commendable efforts.

But, on the other side, the second half gets slightly overdramatic, passé and foreseeable. The songs of the movie are an average affair. But the movie does have its heart in the right place and so it is easy to neglect such errors.

Overall, film Hindi Medium is praiseworthy to watch once for its entertaining satire and comic elements.

Film Meri Pyaari Bindu is commendable to watch once due to its entertainment quotients.

When the promos of YRF movie Meri Pyaari Bindu were released, it gave the impression that the movie was more of a musical tribute to the Golden Era of Hindi film music than an actual love story. Recall the sacrificial, altruistic love shown in the movies from the Raj Kapoor era where the best friend of the heroine loved her but she only cherished his friendship? Meri Pyaari Bindu is a nostalgic tribute to the time and attempts a similar love story.

Filmmaker Maneesh Sharma gamble his money on nostalgia and Khuranna two years ago with Dum Laga Ke Haisha. Now, director Akshay Roy has endeavored the same, using Khurrana and Parineeti Chopra’s screen presence. Maneesh has produced both the movies.

Meri Pyaari Bindu is like the well-known cup of extra-milky tea with two spoons of sugar on a rainy Calcutta evening. Parineeti Chopra's Bindu is bubbly and cute but stays on the surface. Ayushmann Khurrana's Abhi gets more to play with. But will their romance make us nostalgic.

Film Meri Pyaari Bindu is about Abhimanyu Roy alias Bubla (Ayushmann Khurrana), a corporate drone-turned-pulp fiction writer, who has been in love with Bindu (Parineeti Chopra) ever since he saw her as a kid. The two grow up together and share a lot of bitter-sweet memories, but when Bubla finally pops the question of wedding, Bindu breaks his heart because she wants to 'find herself' before committing to a marriage. Pointless to say, Abhimanyu is heart-broken and how he deals with this, forms the rest of the plot.

Ayushmann is quite warm and relevant as Bubla, the 'boy next door', who loves Bindu with his heart and soul. Ayushmann gets a lot to play with as regards his role and the man has done full justice to his character. Parineeti has got quite a peculiar and bubbly character. It’s a delight to watch Parineeti Chopra, especially because she has a lot more to do. Her character has quirks and flaws and lows and highs and she’s more realistic. The rest of the cast, comprising Abhimanyu's family members, his roommates and their common friends and relatives have done a great job and managed to elevate the humour quotient of the movie.

While the film stumbles in a lot of places, it works decently on one count: as a romantic comedy aimed to hit that sweet spot between your lungs, every once in a while. Chopra and Khurrana make for an electric couple; their real-life love for Bollywood music comes through. They’re silly and adorable together.

But, as for the movie, though the first half is quite light-hearted and fun, the plot is quite fantastical and dreamlike. As, Abhi and Bindu are seen grooving to songs from black and white movies during their childhood in the early 80s. Furthermore, the plot seems to be a blend of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and the forthcoming Half Girlfriend. It has nothing new to offer and the sight of Abhimanyu mooning over Bindu throughout the duration of the movie. The Kolkata vibe has been captured memorably by the director and some of the scenes are quite touching, but such scenes are few and far between.

Overall, Meri Pyaari Bindu is commendable to watch once due to its entertainment quotients.

A group of blasphemous, dogmatic and rebellious women who are dependent on men's fleshly needs to earn a living are the heroines of Srijit Mukerji's melodrama that is set against the backdrop of partition. Begum Jaan’s story set during that particular historical period when the country was being divided into India and Pakistan, and that left millions of our countrymen deeply affected and changed their lives forever. Begum Jaan (Vidya Balan) a self-appointed matron for a bunch of sex workers is the central character of the movie.

The remake of Bengali movie Rajkahini, Begum Jaan revolves around the titular character (Vidya Balan) and her bevy of sex workers, who operate in a sprawling old brothel in rural North India in the pre-Independence era. When the Independence of India also marks the Partition of the country in Hindustan and Pakistan, the very existence of the brothel is threatened when the line dividing the two countries is drawn though the brothel.

Government officials of both the countries (Ashish Vidyarthi and Rajit Kapoor) approach the Begum to ask her to vacate the brothel, but on getting a hostile response, the two are compelled to unleash diabolical assassin Kabir (Chunkey Pandey) and his bunch of cut-throats on the women. Will Begum and her girls manage to conquer the enemy?

Vidya Balan is Begam Jaan plunges into her character with the ferocity and aggression that her mascara rimmed eyes display. Vidya Balan plays this brusque, impossibly cynical Madame of a brothel with a lot of conviction and confidence. But one wishes her talent was used in a better film. Vidya Balan’s raunchy dialogues are too good. The rest of the cast, including Pallavi Sharda, Ila Arun, Gauahar Khan, Rajit and Ashish are good while Chunkey, with his stained teeth and an air of restrained menace, is an absolute pleasure to watch. Naseeruddin Shah, who essays the local emperor, hasn’t put many efforts in the role and performs his negligible best.

Begum’s spirit is infectious though. She looks like a Bengal tigress whether she is defending her body or boundaries. But, trying to retell her virtues through various historical avatars in animation, is far too indulgent. Also chats between officials of the INC and Muslim League, or for that matter between other cardboard cutouts, is artificial. The cinematographer’s effort to capture the Indo-Pak divide with close-ups in half frames, seems inappropriate.

As for the film itself, it has certain influential moments and a lot of good dialogues.

The movie has a very ‘over the top’ feel to it with loads of drama aimed at regular entertainment. Had the filmmaker adopted a restrained approach, the influence might have been much more powerful. The Holi number is lively with arresting visuals.

In general, Begum Jaan is commendable for its entertaining melodrama and powerful dialogues.

Film Phillauri Review: Go to watch funny ghost of Anushka Sharma!

The beautiful actress cum producer Anushka Sharma made her debut as a producer with the dark thriller NH10 and now her second production endeavor is a comic ghost story set against the backdrop of a Punjabi marriage.

  

The story revolves around as Kanan accidentally marries a ghost, Shashi, while conducting pre-wedding rituals to get rid of bad luck. But as luck would have it, Shashi sticks around and turns into his agony aunt. Kanan (Suraj Sharma), a Punjabi lad studying in Canada, comes back to his hometown in Punjab to get married to his childhood sweetheart Anu (Mehreen Kaur Pirzada). But, on discovering that Kanan is a 'manglik', the family decides to get him married to a tree as per traditions before his actual marriage. This ritual but complicates everything when Shashi (Anushka Sharma), a ghost residing on the tree starts haunting Kanan as she considers herself married to him. In the meantime, Kanan develops cold feet about this wedding, which strains his relationship with Anu. On interacting more with Shashi, Kanan discovers her life story, which comprises her protective elder brother (Manav Vij) and her star-crossed lover (Diljit Dosanjh), a rural singer. How Kanan helps Shashi find solace and gets his own life back on track in the process, forms the rest of the plot.

  

Suraj Sharma had become a known face after the success of Life Of Pi but unable to impress with latest act in this movie and seems to have a same expression throughout the movie while Mehreen is watchable. Anushka, Manav and Diljit manage are OK with their efforts. Anushka delivers a solid performance with a weird mix of sadness and humour.

Though the initial twenty minutes of the movie seem to promise an entertaining story, the plot starts going downward from then on. The pace is slow and uninspiring and the screenplay is relatively slack. The invisibility of the ghost can only get so many laughs; the tale shifts between Shashi’s past and Kanan’s present seem unexpected; the soulful songs are easy on the ears but strain your eyes by adding to the runtime, and most notably, Shashi’s story is largely formulaic.

Ideally, Phillauri is a winner and that much was evident from the promo. The story is superbly original, culturally on point and has great potential. The problem is, you only get what you see in the trailer. The funny, exciting one-line plot develops into a two-and-a-half hour movie that is full of romantic-movie tropes.

Phillauri had a very innovative marketing. From Anushka replying a journalist’s call to #ShashiWasThere, the movie was promoted hard. Luckily, Phillauri’s strong buzz did not weaken with its release. It has set the box office on fire in north India and it is only anticipated to grow in days to come. And why not, after all Phillauri gives us something that the current breed of love stories dearth — not just an old school romance but moments where you can stop and feel your heartbeat.

Phillauri takes references from the traditional stories where ghosts and spirits are a part of stories for every generation. Shah Rukh Khan’s Paheli took us to Rajasthan and its hidden stories. Anushka Sharma gives us Punjab. The first half of the movie is mesmerizing and you won’t even realise when it is half time. A crisper editing here and there post interval could’ve worked wonders for Phillauri.

Overall, it is worthy to watch once for the funny ghost of Anushka Sharma with a few good performances. It is a light-hearted, average love story.

Film Anaarkali Of Aarah Review: It is worthy to watch once for a strong social message!

Earlier, Shoojit Sircar had made a movie named Pink, which sent across a strong message that a woman's consent should never be taken for granted irrespective of her occupation, her background or her attire. Swara Bhaskar's newest release Anaarkali Of Aarah, which is set in bucolic Bihar, sends across the same message but doesn't lack in packing an equally powerful punch, despite its comparatively smaller budget.

The story revolves around Anarkali (Swara Bhaskar) is a singer-dancer, who specializes in bawdy numbers and entertains her exclusively male audience with her 'latka-jhatkas'. But, when a politically connected official (Sanjay Mishra) tries to paw and grope her on stage in an intoxicated stage, the aggressive Anaarkali decides to fight back and take on the corrupt and chauvinistic system. Her act of defiance forces Anaarkali to go on the run and how she manages to deal with the challenges that come her way, forms the rest of the plot.

Swara has been proving her mettle since a long time and after hit film Nil Battey Sannata, she comes back with another influential performance as Anaarkali, who confesses to not being 'doodh ki dhooli', but that doesn't mean any man can grope or paw her without her consent. Swara is aggressive and vulnerable in equal measures and your heart goes out to her as she stands alone against a system, which cannot comprehend why a 'naachne-gaanewali' should object to being treated like a piece of meat.

Pankaj Tripathi as her colleague Rangeela too is effective enough in depicting a flawed character, who wants to help Anaarkali, but is a slave of his conditioning at the same time. Mishra, who has been amusing us with his funny roles since years, is awesome in her act. The rest of the supporting cast too is unexpectedly good and adds more flavor to the plot.

In general, Anaarkali Of Aarah comes across as the rural equivalent of Pink but what makes the movie bigger is the fact that it doesn't have the superstar Amitabh Bachchan admonishing the viewers in his remarkable baritone that a 'No means No'. Here, Bhaskar does most of the talking and that too, with dialogues liberally peppered with abuses. The movie has some effective dialogues and the climax scene is definite to make you pump your fist in the air as Anaarkali finally gets her revenge.

Overall, it is worthy to watch once for the powerful act of Swara Bhaskar with a strong social message. 

Badrinath Ki Dulhania Review: It is a fun film with noble social message!

Badrinath Ki Dulhania starts as a sweet love story between a Jhansi lad and a Kota lass, but the director understands the current tide of movies that celebrate powerful, liberated women, so it transforms into a progressive story before turning cute-sweet again.

Bollywood stars Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt make a great pair was discovered in Student Of The Year and repeated in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, which is why, Badrinath Ki Dulhania was one of the most awaited movies this year.

Badrinath Bansal (Varun Dhawan), the scion of a patriarchal and old-fashioned family, falls for Vaidehi Tripathi (Alia Bhatt), a girl with a mind of her own. In order to woo her, Badri promises to help her find a suitable groom for her sister and Vaidehi too gets pressurized to marry her because he comes from a renowned family and has helped her sister find her Mr. Right.

But, Vaidehi wants to follow her dreams and this sets the stage for heartbreak and tragedy. How the two manage to cope with this, forms the rest of the plot.

Varun Dhawan is wonderful as the spoiled Badri, who wears his heart on his sleeve and manages to win your with his 'boy-next-door' charisma. What works for Varun is the honesty with which he has depicted his character, be it funny scenes or intense ones and the guy, who has mostly essayed urbane roles, simply wows you with his rural avatar. While, Alia is energetic and helpless in equal measures as and when the situation demands it and the chemistry between the two is one of the highlights of the movie. Sahil Vaid is good with his act. He essays the role of Badri's loyal sidekick Somdev. This actor, who had also played Varun's friend in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, has got some of the best lines in the movie.

Film Badrinath Ki Dulhania stars off rather cheerily and with dollops of humour that is sure to make you laugh admiringly. But, towards the intermission point, you start to realize that there is more to the plot than a soft love story. The second half of the movie, though lengthy, strives to strike a blow for women empowerment and against patriarchy. Shashank Khaitan deserves a pat on his back for putting across his point without making the movie too preachy or heavy. Badrinath Ki Dulhania sends across a message efficiently that in the absence of respect, love cannot survive and there are moments in the movie, which will make you cheer the makers. Though some scenes may come across as contrived, the makers have their hearts in the right place and so, the movie does succeed to touch your heart.

Another element that works for the movie is its music, which is foot-tapping and entertaining, be it Tamma Tamma or the title track.

Overall, Badrinath Ki Dulhania is a commendable film for its social message and Alia Bhatt’s tall performance with amazing chemistry with Varun Dhawan.

Film Commando 2 Review: Worthy to watch for some high-octane actions!

In 2013’s film Commando, Vidyut Jammwal enthralled everyone with his gravity-defying stunt sequences and kick-ass action scenes, so when it was pronounced that the makers are planning a bigger and better sequel, hopes were sky-high.

The Home Minister of India (Shefali Shah) assigns a four member special unit, comprising a dedicated police officer (Freddy Daruwala), ex-commando turned encounter specialist (Vidyut Jammwal), corrupt cop obsessed with brands (Adah Sharma) and a hacker to undertake a covert operation.

Ex- Army Commando-turned- Special Cell operative Karan Dogra (Jammwal) is on the trail of Vicky Chadda (Thakur Anoop Singh), an alleged middle man of people holding hoards of black money in the post-demonetisation scenario. Dogra jets off to Malaysia with brand-conscious encounter specialist Bhawna Reddy (Adah Sharma), the robotic ACP Bakhtawar (Freddy Daruwala) and geeky Zafar (Sumit Gulati), a hacker extraordinaire to bring back Vicky and his wife Maria (Esha Gupta) to face trial in India.

But, the mission is compromised from day one and how Karan manages to win the day despite the countless double crosses and twists, forms the rest of the plot.

Vidyut Jammwal looks flamboyant with his unruly mane and bulging muscles and he can pull off overwhelming action scenes with effortless ease. Vidyut still has a long way to go if he wants to be a good actor. Adah Sharma has overdone the Hyderabadi pronunciation and has nothing much to offer in terms of act while Freddy confines himself to staring threateningly at the camera. Esha is beautiful.

Film Commando 2 may be better in terms of budget, but when it comes to content, the previous version is better than this sequel version. Commando was made with simplicity and decency, which appealed to audiences, but with Commando 2, the makers have gone out of their ways to cook up a forced plot, which combined with a feeble screenplay, poor acts and ordinary dialogues, makes an average film. There are a lot of needless endorsement of Government campaigns like 'Swachh Bharat' and Demonetisation, which may make you irritating. Director Deven Bhojani tries too hard to evoke intrigue but the feeble script leaves no room for thrill.

Commando 2 takes us to global hotspots in its tracking of the black money and the well-dressed criminals who handle the cash, but is hampered by an absence of freshness.

Overall, it is worthy to watch once for its beautiful exotic settings and high octane action sequences.

Jolly LLB 2 is worthy to watch for performances of trio Akshay, Saurabh and Annu Kapoor with great entertainment quotient.

Jolly LLB 2 is a good movie with an inspiring tale, using star power to fulfill commercial needs.

This sequel of Jolly LLB, noticeably superior to the first, brings back the joys of watching a movie with a better plot, a strong sense of time and place and rhythm, and a confidence in itself that has been missing from the Hindi Film Industry. Yes, there are a few pros and cons, but in general, this Akshay Kumar-starrer is a winner.

There is an actual world outside film courtrooms where a common man can’t distinguish between a corrupt judicial system and a dishonest police administration. And this world comes charging at you before you can look away. Add a few bullets and some dark humour and you get Jolly LLB 2, the second movie in the Jolly LLB (2013) franchise.

Kanpur’s Jagdishwar Mishra aka Jolly (Akshay Kumar) practices in the “Lucknow high court” and wants to own a chamber. His father has been a stenographer for a top lawyer for years, and that makes Jolly his natural successor. However, this is how he gets treated at work. His boss sends him to buy vegetables and he is also supposed to help arrange a domestic party. He is whatever but a self-respecting lawyer.

He isn’t the only odd character around though. Justice Sunderlal Tripathi (Saurabh Shukla) has undergone a bypass surgery, and he has to dance at his daughter’s marriage. Guess what? He practices his steps inside the court.

Time has hardened Pramod Mathur (Annu Kapoor), Jolly’s archrival and a prolific lawyer in the city. He isn’t scared of even fighting the judge an interesting departure from the original where nobody risked to insult justice Tripathi at the Delhi high court.

Jolly could have avoided falling prey to such a system, but he has taken the onus of getting the justice delivered in a fake encounter case in which inspector Suryaveer Singh (Kumud Mishra) is the prime suspect.

But you also know that this Jolly will see the path of truth sooner vs later, and set out to slap the bad guys into submission. Not with the kind of kicks and slaps that we’ve got used to from Akshay’s actioners, but the sort of colourful oral sparring that lawyers engage in, dotted with some funny throwaway lines which the star generously shares with his terrific co-stars, particularly Saurabh Shukla and Annu Kapoor.

Numerous scenes of the film remind the spectator of those legal satire shows where the judicial system looks like a big, dark joke. Mostly the joke is on Jolly, and sometimes it’s on us. We somehow know that there’s no escaping the wrath of overworked judges and a broken system. But Jolly needs to find loopholes in the system to keep his hopes afloat.

This is where the screenplay decides to do away with the good research done by the film’s team. It starts to appear like a mix of many movies. If the judge looks inspired from And Justice For All’s John Forsythe, Jolly himself seems to be taking a cue from Arshad Warsi’s much-loved act in the first movie.

Also, the film appears confused between a satire and a thriller. The most effective scenes are cut short to pave way for action scenes. This way the pace is maintained, but the theme is overlooked.

It’s only in the second half that Jolly LLB 2 comes back to a lengthy courtroom battle and gives its actors a chance to rise and shine. Here, Annu Kapoor gives Akshay Kumar a solid run for his money. Over-emphasis on melodrama hampers a well thought-out central idea.

It’s the great support cast of Jolly LLB 2 that sustains the momentum. If Saurabh Shukla is remarkably adorable as the tired judge then Huma Qureshi effortlessly fits in the role of a Gucci-loving, wine-swigging housewife. Kumud Mishra as the thoroughly bad cop is a nice change of image for this amiable actor.

The friendly sarcasm between a Kanpur migrant and a Lucknow lawyer are entertaining to watch. The difficulties faced by a Delhi judge in Lucknow are tragically funny, particularly when lawyers call their friends and local criminals to fist-fight on their behalf, inside the courtroom.

The use of local dialect sometimes looks forced and the movie does away with the innocence of Jolly LLB (2013), in order to become a tearjerker. The strategy doesn’t work.

But what works perfectly is the focus on real issues like corruption, terrorism and under-pressure judges. Kapoor has tackled all these problems with a great control. He has induced small, hilarious moments at crucial junctures that work as perfect breathers. Thanks to his understanding of court procedures, his characters look human and vulnerable unlike usual Bollywood movies where the hero plays the victim and the judge.

Akshay Kumar guarantees that you keep smiling at regular intervals. He makes you remember Warsi, but also adds his touch to Jolly. Overlook some of the negligible flaws, it is a great entertainer.
