After being in the eye of the storm in the Udta Punjab hullabaloo,
Pahlaj Nihalani, chief of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) told
that the Board was simply following the guidelines.
The CBFC had suggested 89 cuts in the movie, following which
the makers of the movie approached the Bombay High Court challenging the
ordered cuts.
On Monday, the court cleared the Abhishek
Chaubey-directorial with just one cut. Speaking to a leading daily, Nihalani
told that the Board respects the Court's decision. He further added that he was
following the guidelines for censorship and if those guidelines are outdated
that is not his fault.
He added that CBFC guidelines need immediate revision as per
the recommendation of the committee set up under the chairmanship of filmmaker
Shyam Benegal. Many in the film industry have demanded Nihalani's resignation
following the court's order, but Nihalani told that he is not answerable to the
industry and if the government asks him to step down he will do so.
Udta Punjab, which stars Kareena Kapoor Khan, Shahid Kapoor,
Alia Bhatt and Diljit Dosanjh, will release on June 17.
