The Supreme Court on Tuesday admitted Maharashtra
government's plea against Bollywood megastar Salman Khan in the 2002
hit-and-run case. The actor was acquitted by the Bombay High Court in the same
case last December.
Unhappy with the judgment, Maharashtra government moved SC
challenging the Bombay HC's judgment in the case. Seemingly, the Attorney
General, on behalf of the state government, requested the court that the case
must be heard on an urgent basis, but SC refused to fast-track the case.
In 2002, Salman's white Toyota Land Cruiser ran over five
men sleeping outside American Express bakery in Bandra, Mumbai, killing one
person and injuring four others.
In December 2015, the Bombay HC acquitted Salman of all
charges and scrapped his five-year jail term. The high court told that the
prosecution was not able to sufficiently establish that the actor was behind
the wheel that night or was drunk at the time of the accident.
In the meantime, Salman is presently prepping for the
release of his movie Sultan, which hits the screens on July 6. The movie also
stars Anushka Sharma, Randeep Hooda and Amit Sadh.
