Irrfan Khan, who has generally stayed away from debates, lately
drew the ire of Muslim clerics with his statement regarding the Islamic concept
of 'Qurbaani'.
Khan was allegedly quoted telling that rather than fasting
during Ramzan, people should self-introspect and that 'qurbaani' is to
sacrifice something close to you instead of a sheep or goat. The gifted actor
further went on to say that nowadays the relevance behind religious activities
is lost and people perform them without knowing the actual message behind them.
Unnecessary to say, this caused a major furore and criticism
from the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) member Zafaryab Gilabi,
who condemned the actor by telling that he is not a religious leader and his
advice is not needed. Maulana Khatri, secretary of Jamaat-e-Ulema-e-Hind also
responded to the actor's comment by saying that Irrfan Khan should concentrate
on his career and should not make such statements.
