International diva Priyanka Chopra adds
another feather to her cap. Well, we all know that she has featured on the
cover of say, a zillion magazines but this time, it is different. Because this
time, Priyanka Chopra has made it to the list of 41 women featured in Allure
Magazine’s Diversity Issue.
This American women’s beauty magazine’s April cover issue
features 41 women who are celebrating diversity through stories of inclusion
and the day-to-day struggles of beauty. The magazine cited, “We 41 women of
color to tell us the story of their lives through their skin—and skin tone.
Because our skin can be both a vulnerability and a defense. But most
importantly, it can be a source of celebration.”
The list of 41 women featured by the magazine includes Padma
Laskhmi, Meghan Markle, Constance Wu, Eva Longoria, Aja Naomi King, and Jessica
Alba, among others. But what caught our attention was Chopra’s frank quote in
the American magazine.
Priyanka is quoted as telling, “My skin is as complicated as
I am. When I was growing up, I didn’t see anyone on television who looked like
me. Initially companies didn’t have colors that matched Asian or Indian skin.
Because I’m darker, I had issues as a teenager—society pressure that a girl is
prettier if she’s lighter. Pressure exist, and it’s on us to make those pressures
not seem important to girls. I’ve achieved what I’ve achieved, and skin color
has nothing to do with it—in fact it might have been an asset. I like the color
of my skin very much. It’s so primitive to me that people are judged on the
basis of the color of their skin. I mean, it’s skin. We all have it.”
