Maharashtra police have issued non-bailable warrants against
former Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni and her husband Vicky Goswami, who is
also an alleged International drug mafia. Both Vicky and Mamta are accused in
the Rs 2,000 crore ephedrine drugs haul case.
Thane police had conducted raids at the Avon Lifesciences
office in Solapur last year and had seized around 18.5 tonne of ephedrine which
was worth over Rs 2,000 crore. A leading news agency quoted police telling,
"ephedrine was being diverted from Avon Lifesciences to a Kenya-based drug
cartel headed by Goswami where it was used to make party-drug
Methamphetamine."
But, the twosome is said to be based outside India. Mamta
Kulkarni's role in the case was confirmed based on a few statements made by
some of their co-accused in the case. The accused have in their statements
mentioned that Goswami and Kulkarni often held meetings.
But, Kulkarni repudiated all allegations against her
pleading innocence. "I have never engaged in any act contrary to the
principles of Indian statutes and am a victim of high-handedness, crude,
unprofessional and unethical conspiracy by the officers of the US’s Drug
Enforcement Administration and the Thane police," Kulkarni told.
She even wrote to the External Affairs Minister Sushma
Swaraj and Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju wherein she demanded that a
probe must be held against the Maharashtra Police to unearth the reasons behind
dragging her name into the drugs case.
Unusually, Mamta along with Vicky was detained by Kenyan
authorities on the charge of drug trafficking in 2014. Goswami was previously
convicted for 25 years in the United Arab Emirates in 1997 in relation to a
drug case but was released in November 2012 on grounds of good conduct. He wedded
Mamta Kulkarni in 2013 and the duo has since then been reported to be based in
Mombasa in Kenya.
