R. Balki's Cheeni Kum was an uncommon movie with an uncommon
casting. In the movie, we saw Amitabh Bachchan romantically paired opposite Tabu and
they both played their own age. Furthermore, we even saw legendary actress
Zohra Sehgal playing the role of Amitabh's mother.
The movie has completed 10 years of its release and a famous
tabloid caught up with Amit Ji, who took a trip down the memory lane. Speaking
about Zohra Sehgal, he specified, "I worked with Zohraji for the first
time in the film, though the association with her goes back to my parents’ time
and Prithvi Theatres. Working with her was an absolute honour for me."
It was rumored that Zohra Ji used to ask for a glass of
whisky from Balki after every shot. Also, Amitabh even gifted Zohra Ji an
entire crate of champagne. Speaking about it, Amit Ji told, "Zohraji was a
rocket on take-off, each day of the shoot. Her energy and joie de vivre (joy of
living) were unmatchable. I cannot remember her asking for a whisky after each
shot from Balki, but yes, she did enjoy her champagne and because she had
expressed a desire to be given some after the film was over, I did send across
the 'bubbly' to her."
He also disclosed that he told yes to Cheeni Kum only
because of the director Balki. He added, "It was the director R. Balki
that made me say yes to the film. Having worked with him on various endorsement
campaigns, when he asked me [to work in the film], I agreed. The script and the
character came after I had already said yes."
