While one looks forward to a splendid performance by Manoj
Bajpayee in Aligarh, it is pretty much on the cards that the Hansal Mehta film
would turn out to be a classy affair, what with National Award winning actor
Rajkummar Rao joining the proceedings. The actor has worked with Hansal in two movies
before this, Shahid and Citylights, both of which won quite some critical
acclaim for the subject matter, narrative and of course the acts.
With Hansal and Rajukummar coming together once more for
Aligarh, guess this is one director-actor 'Jodi' which is for the keeps?
"Well, I am hoping and though people keep asking me
about that, I don’t discuss it too much," says Hansal, "We are a
happy combination for sure; we are a family. One must keep the family growing
and we share a certain comfort level. We challenge each other on a regular
basis. I keep thinking about how to portray Rajkummar differently and he also
takes up that challenge. So while I try to bring different things on the table,
he too interprets my scripts quite beautifully."
No surprise, with three movies in a row for the director and
the actor, it has come to a point where spoken words are no more a need while
calling the shots.
"That's correct," agrees Hansal, "Sometimes I
don't have to tell Rajkummar what to do and how to do. He knows when I really
like a take or not like it. We have reached that point in life where we have
developed a solid understanding. When you have that kind of an equation with
someone, it results in something beautifully. Since it is working out so
beautifully, why tamper with the combination."
With the film set for release this Friday, one looks forward
to yet another hard hitting narrative by Hansal with some terrific act on
display by Rajkummar Rao and of course Manoj Bajpayee.
Written by Apurva Asrani and produced by Karma Pictures
& Eros International, Aligarh is based on the real life tale of Dr.
Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras from Aligarh Muslim University who was sacked from
his position on charges of homosexuality in 2010.
