💔 International Emmys 2025: India Falls Short as Global Talent Triumphs
Oriol Pla Wins Best Actor, Diljit Dosanjh Misses Out for
Acclaimed Amar Singh Chamkila
The 53rd International Emmy Awards, held on Monday night in
New York, celebrated exceptional global television but proved to be a
challenging night for the Indian contingent. Despite high hopes surrounding
Netflix’s acclaimed biopic Amar Singh Chamkila, India did not
secure any competitive awards.
The biggest news for fans was the result in the Best
Performance by an Actor category. Punjabi actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh,
nominated for his powerful portrayal of the slain folk icon Amar Singh
Chamkila, narrowly missed the award. The prestigious Emmy went to Spanish actor
Oriol Pla for his moving performance in the series Yo, adicto (I,
Addict).
🌟 Oriol Pla Clinches Best
Actor
Oriol Pla’s win for the Disney+ series Yo, adicto
marks a significant victory for Spanish-language content. Pla's intensely raw
depiction of a man battling drug addiction resonated strongly with the
International Academy voters, leading him to triumph over a tough field that
included Diljit Dosanjh, David Mitchell (UK), and Diego Vasquez (Colombia).
🎬 Amar Singh Chamkila
Shut Out in Mini-Series Category
In a second blow for the team behind the Imtiaz Ali-directed
film, Amar Singh Chamkila also failed to win the Best TV
Movie/Mini-Series category. The award was ultimately claimed by the
compelling UK production, Lost Boys & Fairies, a drama about
a gay couple navigating the adoption process.
🏆 Key Winners from the
2025 Gala
While the focus was on the Indian nominations, the night saw
the United Kingdom emerge as a major winner, dominating the scripted
categories:
- Best
Performance by an Actress: The award was secured by the UK's Anna
Maxwell Martin for her gripping work in Until I Kill You.
- Best
Drama Series: The prize went to the UK drama, Rivals.
- Best
Comedy Series: The quirky British production, Ludwig,
was honored with the Emmy in the comedy segment.
✨ A Milestone Nomination for
Diljit Dosanjh
Despite the competitive losses, Diljit Dosanjh’s nomination
remains a significant moment for Indian cinema. His appearance on the
International Emmys red carpet alongside director Imtiaz Ali was celebrated
globally, showcasing the power of regional Indian storytelling on the world
stage. The critical acclaim for Amar Singh Chamkila has cemented its
status as one of India's most important films in recent years, proving that
quality content transcends language barriers.
