"To Look Younger": Pahlaj Nihalani Reveals Akshay Kumar's "Shocking" Demand for Kareena Kapoor in 2002's Talaash
Mumbai, Maharashtra, India: Two decades after its
release, the casting of the 2002 (released 2003) film Talaash: The Hunt
Begins... is back in the spotlight, thanks to a candid revelation by
veteran filmmaker and former CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalani. In a recent interview,
Nihalani exposed a "shocking truth" about superstar Akshay Kumar's
insistence on Kareena Kapoor Khan as his leading lady, shedding light on
the evolving power dynamics within the Bollywood industry.
Speaking on the "Learning With The Legend"
podcast, Nihalani detailed an unprecedented demand from an actor in his
extensive career as a producer. "Earlier, producers and directors used to
cast and heroes wouldn't interfere in casting," Nihalani recalled. "The
first actor to interfere in casting with me was Akshay Kumar in Talaash
in 2002."
The Non-Negotiable Condition: "The Heroine Will Be
Kareena Kapoor"
According to Nihalani, Akshay Kumar's demand for Kareena
Kapoor was absolute and non-negotiable. The actor reportedly told the producer,
"'We can start the movie tomorrow, and you can give me any amount that you
want, but the heroine of this film will be Kareena Kapoor.'"
This firm stance from a major star was a first for Nihalani,
especially for a significant project like Talaash, which was made with a
substantial budget for its time.
The "Shocking Truth": An Attempt to Project
Youth
When pressed to explain the reasoning behind Akshay Kumar's
specific insistence on a much younger Kareena Kapoor (who was then in her early
20s, while Akshay was in his mid-30s), Nihalani divulged what he termed a
common, yet often unspoken, industry strategy.
"Sometimes, as the actors grow old they want to star
against younger actresses so that their own age looks less," Nihalani
revealed. This candid admission suggests that the casting decision was likely a
calculated move by Akshay Kumar to maintain a youthful on-screen image, a
tactic frequently employed by male leads in Bollywood to prolong their careers.
A Shifting Power Dynamic in Bollywood
Nihalani's revelations go beyond a single casting anecdote;
they underscore a fundamental shift in the power balance within the Hindi film
industry. He expressed concern that control has largely transitioned from
producers and directors to actors, who now frequently dictate key aspects of
production, including casting, choice of crew, and even directors.
"Aajkal toh yeh pura racket hai. Aaj kal sab kuch actor
ka hi hai," Nihalani remarked, criticizing the burgeoning "entourage
costs" and elaborate demands made by contemporary actors, from multiple
vanity vans to specific dietary requirements.
Talaash and its Legacy (or Lack Thereof)
Talaash: The Hunt Begins..., directed by Suneel
Darshan, ultimately featured Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor. The action
thriller, released in 2003, did not perform well at the box office and garnered
mixed to negative reviews.
However, Nihalani's recent candidness offers an invaluable
peek into the intricate, often unpublicized, decision-making processes behind
major Bollywood productions. It highlights how star power and strategic image
management can significantly influence casting choices, sometimes even
overshadowing purely artistic considerations.
