"₹20 Crore is My Life Savings": When Shah Rukh Khan Almost Walked Away from Buying KKR, Reveals Lalit Modi!
Today, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) stand as one of the most successful, valuable, and widely followed franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
In a recent candid interview, former IPL chairman and architect of the league, Lalit Modi, made a fascinating revelation about Shah Rukh Khan.
1. "I Don't Understand Cricket": SRK’s Initial Apprehension
When Lalit Modi was conceptualizing the IPL in the mid-2000s, he knew that to compete with prime-time television networks and popular daily soaps, cricket needed a heavy dose of entertainment.
However, when approached, the King Khan of Bollywood was heavily hesitant.
"Who better than Shah Rukh Khan to own a team? The funny thing was that Shah Rukh didn't like cricket and didn't really understand cricket.
He is a football fan," Lalit Modi revealed. "When I told him I wanted him to buy a team, he was apprehensive. He said, 'I don't understand cricket.' I told him to leave that to me and that I would ensure the right team and system were put in place."
2. The Financial Risk: "A Big Part of My Savings Account"
While King Khan was intrigued by the revolutionary concept of city-based franchise cricket, the massive financial commitment weighed heavily on him.
Modi recalled the exact conversation where SRK questioned the cost structure of winning a bid:
Shah Rukh’s Question: "If I happen to win a team, how much is it going to cost?"
Lalit Modi’s Answer: "The down payment would be ₹20 crore."
SRK’s Reluctant Reply: "But that's a big part of my savings account."
3. How a Clever Nokia Deal Secured KKR "For Free"
Understanding Shah Rukh's financial dilemma, Lalit Modi used his business acumen to orchestrate a masterstroke that solved the problem within hours.
At the time, mobile handset giant Nokia was desperately trying to sign Shah Rukh Khan as a brand ambassador, but the actor hadn't shown interest.
"I asked Nokia, if Shah Rukh were to win a team, would they sponsor the front of the jersey?
I told them I could guarantee Shah Rukh would wear their shirts and caps, and asked if they would pay a $5 million advance. They said yes ," Modi explained.
This structural workaround turned the high-risk investment into an immediate win-win:
The Result: Shah Rukh Khan wrote a cheque for the team at 12:00 PM.
By that evening, Nokia wrote another cheque for $5 million (approx. ₹20+ crore back then) as an advance for the KKR consortium sponsorship. Modi's Takeaway: "It was a win-win for Nokia if Shah Rukh owned a team.
It was a win-win for Shah Rukh if Nokia became the front-shirt sponsor. He basically bought it for free."
4. The Pillar of IPL’s Success
To ease the financial load further, Shah Rukh eventually partnered with his close friend and actress Juhi Chawla, along with her husband Jay Mehta, to form the KKR ownership group.
Lalit Modi credited Shah Rukh Khan as the ultimate "pillar" who transformed the IPL from a standard sporting league into a massive cultural phenomenon.
Decades later, with multiple IPL championship trophies in their cabinet and a multi-million dollar brand valuation, the gamble Shah Rukh Khan almost walked away from has officially gone down as one of the greatest business decisions in sports history.
