Veteran actor and sitting BJP MP Vinod Khanna passed away at
the age of 70 on Thursday after a difficult battle with cancer.
Veteran Bollywood actor Vinod Khanna, who had been very
ill since past few months, passed away at a Mumbai hospital on Thursday.
The actor, who was part of numerous Bollywood hits like Amar
Akbar Anthony and The Burning Train, was admitted to the HN Reliance
Foundation and Research Centre in Girgaon, Mumbai lately.
Reportedly, Khanna was suffering from bladder cancer but,
his son Rahul Khanna had specified that his father got admitted to
the hospital for severe dehydration. When a hospital picture of Vinod Khanna
surfaced, it shocked his admirers as he looked like a mere shadow of his former
dashing self in it.
Actor Vinod Khanna, a sitting Bharatiya Janata Party MP from
Gurdaspur district of Punjab, was born on 6 October, 1946. He was seen in 141
films between 1968 and 2013.
Khanna was also seen in lead roles in numerous popular movies,
including Mere Apne, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Gaddaar, Jail
Yatra, Imitihaan, Inkaar, Kuchhe Dhaage, Amar Akbar Anthony, Rajput, Qurbani, Kudrat, Dayavan, Kaarnama, Suryaa:
An Awakening and Jurm.
Vinod Khanna made his debut in 1968 with Mann Ka Meet.
He went on to win many awards, including the Filmfare award for best supporting
actor for Haath ki Safaai and the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award
in 1999.
In 1982, at the peak of his film career, Khanna decided to leave
the film industry briefly to follow his spiritual guru Osho Rajneesh.
After a five-year break, he returned to the Hindi film
industry to give hit films Insaaf and Satyamev Jayate.
Khanna joined politics in 1997 and got elected from
Gurdaspur on a BJP ticket in the next year's Lok Sabha poll. Later, during the
time of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government he became Union minister for
culture and tourism in 2002. Later, he became a minister of state in the
Ministry of External Affairs. Khanna lost the 2009 election, but was elected
again from Gurdaspur in 2014.
