Emcee Anna Wintour honored honoree Baz Luhrmann at the LACMA Art + Film Gala on Saturday by sharing a humorous story about Rihanna. The event brought together a swarm of celebrities in one place and raised a record-breaking 6.4 million USD for philanthropic organizations. The most amazing part of the festivities was the music that Charli XCX performed throughout the gala.
Wintour gave special recognition to her longstanding partner and friend, the
avant-garde director Luhrmann. Throughout her speech, she cited several
occasions when she had previously profited from Luhrmann's artistic
achievements. One of the stories she shared, according to a daily, was about
how Luhrmann planned Rihanna's table dance at the Met Gala.
She disclosed, "The year we put on a show of Chinese art and fashion, he announced before the gala that the evening could not go on unless we tracked down a giant gong with which to announce dinner. While we were locating and trying to figure out how to deliver this enormous instrument, Baz had somehow persuaded Rihanna to surprise everybody by dancing down the center of the dinner table."
"Incidentally, we are no longer allowed to give dinners in that gallery, but no one has stopped talking about that night," Wintour further revealed.
Luhrmann, the director of well-known films including Romeo and Juliet, The Great Gatsby, Moulin Rouge, and Elvis, did not shy away from the limelight while urging those artists to motivate the future generation while sporting a dapper Gucci suit. He emphasized that artists had to make an effort to create art that will motivate generations to come.
He underlined that everyone in the room should participate and encourage young voices and energy entering the arts in order to promote innovation and teamwork. "It is now our responsibility to turn around, create room, and support the new voices, energies, and generations so that they can burst through this stagnant world we live in."
Baz Luhrmann emphasized that he was not talking about retiring, but rather
about the artists present having an obligation to support the role models of
his generation by creating space for them.
