The Indian film industry mourns the loss of a true icon, veteran actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, who passed away today, April 4, 2025, at the age of 87 after a prolonged illness.
Known affectionately as "Bharat Kumar" for his indelible contributions to patriotic cinema, his passing marks the end of an era.   

Born Harikrishna Giri Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Abbottabad (now in Pakistan), Manoj Kumar's journey in Bollywood spanned several decades, leaving an enduring legacy etched in the hearts of millions.
Inspired by Dilip Kumar, he adopted the screen name Manoj Kumar and made his debut in the 1957 film "Fashion." However, it was his roles in the 1960s and 70s that cemented his position as a cinematic giant.

Manoj Kumar became synonymous with patriotic films, a genre he embraced with unwavering passion. His portrayal of iconic characters in films like "Shaheed" (1965), where he played the role of Bhagat Singh, "Upkar" (1967), which earned him the "Bharat Kumar" title for his portrayal of a dedicated farmer embodying the "Jai Jawan Jai Kisan" spirit, and "Purab Aur Paschim" (1970), celebrating Indian values, resonated deeply with the national sentiment.   

Beyond his patriotic endeavors, Manoj Kumar showcased his versatility in films across different genres, including the thriller "Gumnaam" (1965), the romantic "Hariyali Aur Rasta" (1962), and the social drama "Roti Kapada Aur Makaan" (1974), which addressed pressing societal issues. His directorial debut, "Upkar," won the National Film Award for Second Best Feature Film. He went on to direct acclaimed films like "Purab Aur Paschim," "Shor" (1972), "Roti Kapada Aur Makaan," and the multi-starrer "Kranti" (1981).   

His signature style, often involving partially covering his face, became instantly recognizable and was widely imitated as a mark of respect and admiration.

  • National Film Award: Best Feature Film for "Upkar" (1968)   
  • Dadasaheb Phalke Award: In 2015, the highest award in Indian cinema, for his lifetime contribution.   
  • Padma Shri: India's fourth-highest civilian award, in 1992.   
  • Filmfare Awards: He won seven Filmfare Awards, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Story, and Best Dialogue for "Upkar," Best Actor for "Be-Imaan" (1972), and Best Director for "Roti Kapada Aur Makaan." He also received the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999.   
  • Numerous Lifetime Achievement Awards at various film festivals.
