If Wishes Could Kill: Netflix’s First YA K-Horror Series is the Must-Watch Thriller of 2026!

Is 'If Wishes Could Kill' Based on a True Story? Facts and Synopsis of the K-Drama!

The era of "K-Horror" is reaching a terrifying new peak. Following the global success of All of Us Are Dead and Sweet Home, Netflix is back with its first-ever Young Adult (YA) occult horror series from South Korea: If Wishes Could Kill (formerly known by the working title Wish Your Death).

Set to release on April 24, 2026, this eight-part series blends high-school drama with a deadly supernatural countdown that is already being compared to Squid Game for its high-stakes tension.

Synopsis: Be Careful What You App For

The story is set within the halls of the prestigious Seorin High School. A group of five friends stumbles upon a mysterious mobile application named "Girigo" (a word meaning "to commemorate" or "honor").

The app promises to grant the user’s deepest, most desperate desires. However, every wish comes with a lethal catch: once the wish is granted, a death warning appears on the user’s phone, initiating a literal countdown to their demise. As their classmates begin to die in sudden, unexplained ways, the group must race to uncover the app's dark origins and break the curse before their own timers hit zero.

Meet the Star Cast: Rising Talents of 2026

The series is being hailed as a launchpad for South Korea’s next generation of superstars, much like the iconic Whispering Corridors franchise.

  • Jeon So-young as Yoo Se-ah: A promising track athlete with a bright energy. To save her friends, she must use her physical strength and determination to outrun a supernatural threat.
  • Kang Mi-na as Lim Na-ri: The school's "it-girl" and a staunch realist. Despite her popular exterior, she harbors secrets that the app eventually exploits.
  • Baek Sun-ho as Kim Geon-woo: Se-ah’s secret boyfriend who finds himself caught between his love for her and the growing obsession with the app.
  • Hyun Woo-seok as Kang Ha-joon: The analytical "brain" of the group. He uses his elite coding skills to try and hack into Girigo's backend to stop the countdown.
  • Lee Hyo-je as Choi Hyeong-wook: The group's mischievous prankster whose life takes a dark turn after his "innocent" wish backfires.
  • Supporting Cast: Includes Jeon So-nee as a modern-day shaman and Roh Jae-won (of Squid Game 2 fame).

3 Interesting Facts About If Wishes Could Kill

  1. A "Kingdom" Connection: The series is directed by Park Youn-seo, who previously served as the second unit director for the global hit Kingdom Season 2 and co-directed the superhero epic Moving. His expertise in blending action with atmospheric horror is a highlight of the show.
  2. Physical Transformation: Lead actress Jeon So-young took her role as a track athlete seriously. She underwent intense track and field training for two months, mastered long-jumping, and even cut her hair short and got a tan to fit the "promising athlete" persona.
  3. Genre-Bending: Director Park described the show as a "genre hybrid," moving beyond standard horror by integrating occult rituals, high-stakes action sequences, and emotional YA romance to ensure there is "never a dull moment" across the eight episodes.
