Dacoit Hindi vs. Telugu: Why Adivi Sesh’s Latest is a Hit in the South but Dull in the North!

Dacoit Hindi vs. Telugu: Why Adivi Sesh’s Latest is a Hit in the South but Dull in the North!

The long-awaited bilingual action-thriller Dacoit: Ek Prem Katha has finally hit theaters, but the initial numbers for the Hindi belt are far from what makers expected. Despite a massive promotional push and the presence of pan-India favorites like Adivi Sesh and Mrunal Thakur, the film opened to a sluggish response in Northern markets.

On its opening day, the Hindi version of Dacoit managed to collect a mere Rs 75 lakh. While Adivi Sesh’s previous Hindi outings like Major saw significant growth through word-of-mouth, Dacoit faces a steep uphill battle to find its footing.

A Tale of Two Markets: Telugu vs. Hindi

While the Hindi collections remained in the "dull" zone, the film performed significantly better in its home turf of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The Telugu version led the charge, contributing to a respectable India net total, though the overall Hindi occupancy remained at a low 12%.

Dacoit Day 1 Box Office Breakdown:

  • Hindi Version (Net): Rs 75 Lakh
  • Telugu Version (Net): Rs 5.60 Crore
  • Total India Net: Rs 6.50 Crore
  • Worldwide Gross: Rs 13.57 Crore

The film's global numbers were bolstered by a decent start in the US and UAE, but for a project mounted on this scale, the domestic Hindi start is being termed underwhelming by trade analysts.

Why the Slow Start for the Hindi Version?

Industry insiders point to a few key factors that hindered the film's debut in the North:

  1. The "Dhurandhar 2" Factor: Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar 2 continues to dominate the Hindi box office even in its fourth week, eating into the screens and showtimes that Dacoit desperately needed.
  2. Lack of Local Buzz: While Mrunal Thakur is a household name in the North, the "gritty regional" aesthetic of the film may have struggled to compete with the heavy-duty masala entertainers currently playing.
  3. The Wait for Reviews: With mixed word-of-mouth regarding the film's pacing and Anurag Kashyap's eccentric role, many Hindi viewers are adopting a "wait and watch" approach.

Synopsis & Cast: Gritty Romance Meets High-Octane Action

Directed by debutant Shaneil Deo, Dacoit follows the story of Hari (Adivi Sesh), a man wrongly imprisoned for 13 years who escapes to seek revenge against his former lover, Juliet (Mrunal Thakur). The film is a departure from Sesh’s usual spy thrillers, focusing more on raw emotion and intense action sequences.

The supporting cast features powerhouses like Prakash Raj, Atul Kulkarni, and Anurag Kashyap as the primary antagonist, a "spiritually quirky" cop.

The Road Ahead: Can It Recover?

For Dacoit to avoid becoming a box office casualty in the Hindi market, it needs to see a 100% to 150% jump on Saturday and Sunday. However, the clock is ticking; Akshay Kumar’s much-anticipated horror-comedy Bhooth Bangla is scheduled for paid previews starting April 15, which will likely take over most major screens.
