As per reports, Shahid Kapoor will be playing the role of
boxing hero Dingko Singh in Raja Krishna Menon’s biopic movie. But, as soon as
the news of Shahid’s casting decision was pronounced, the actor faced a lot of
criticism on social media. Although admirers of the actor and Dingko Singh
rejoiced, there were others who did not spare the makers of the movie. As a
result, Twitter-verse criticized Shahid Kapoor as they felt that an actor
hailing from the northeast should have been roped in to play the role of Dingko
Singh in his biopic.
Finally, Shahid Kapoor has broken his silence over all the
criticism related to him playing the role of northeast boxing champion Dingko
Singh. In a chat, Shahid revealed, “I was surprised, we are one country! I was
born in Delhi, I live in Mumbai. I’ve played Tommy Singh, a Punjabi (in Udta
Punjab; 2017), a Kashmiri boy (in Haider; 2016), now I’m playing Sushil Kumar
Pant (Batti Gul Meter Chalu)… No one from these states seemed to have any
problem… I think we should rise above all this.”
For the information, Dingko Singh's full name is Ngangom
Dingko Singh and he hails from Manipur. Dingko was the first and only Asian
gold medalist boxer from India in the Bantamweight category. Also, in 2013, the
boxer was honoured with Padma Shri.
