A lot of celebrities have said goodbye to Twitter and the
latest to quit the micro-blogging site is Brit singer Ed Sheeran. The Shape of
You hit-maker told a leading Hollywood daily, “I've actually come off Twitter
completely. I can't read it. I go on it and there's nothing but people saying
mean things. Twitter's a platform for that.”
“One comment ruins your day. But that's why I've come off
The head-f*** for me has been trying to work out why people dislike me so
much”, he further added.
Sheeran also clarified that he gets all the ego-checking he
needs from his family and friends, so anonymous strangers shouldn't feel
obligated to chime in. "I have people like my dad who will have a
conversation with me," Sheeran told. "I don't have to have someone
calling me a whatever."
Sheeran’s account will still be active, however, as the
singer-songwriter will still be posting regularly to his Instagram, which will
automatically generate tweets with the same content. But he won't be checking
back in to see what Twitter users have written in response.
Singer Lady Gaga came out in support of Ed Sheeran on
Instagram and shared a pic with a caption that read, “What an incredible
talented artist I LOVE ED @edsheeran deserves all our love and respect like all
humans do. I wish all people on the internet would be positive and loving and
apart of creating an online community that is kind and empowering, not hateful
and mean. No reason to tear down an artist simply because they are on top. Work
harder to be kinder everybody. That should be your first duty to humanity.”
Sheeran's last Twitter posts were made after his Glastonbury
performance, where he first criticized people who thought he was using a
backing track when in fact he had his usual loop station set-up.
