In recent time, a delegation led by the Censor Board of Film
Certification Chief Pahlaj Nihalani met the Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra
Fadnavis at his residence to discuss the 28 percent tax which is to be levied
on cinema tickets under Goods and Services Tax (GST) tax.
The Maharashtra Chief Minister had guaranteed the delegation
that he will talk to the Government to reduce the entertainment tax limit.
Now, it seems the Government has finally considered the
request and has recommended 18% on tickets up to Rs 100. CBFC Chief took to
Twitter to thank the Government and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in particular
for taking their request forward. Further, he also added that the Government
must also extend the slab for tickets up to Rs 200.
"We thank #GSTCouncil & #NDA esp @arunjaitley &
@Dev_Fadnavis for considering our request & recommending 18% on tickets up
to Rs. 100/-," posted Mr. Nihalani on Twitter.
He further added, "However, this isn't enough;
#GSTCouncil needs to extend the slab for tickets up to Rs 200/-. Also, there
shouldn't be further loading."
Previously, actor Kamal Haasan had lashed out at the
government for killing the regional cinema by imposing such high tax rates on
movie tickets. He even declared that if this continues, he will leave the
entertainment industry.
