During an action-packed and sad season, Bella Ramsey, star of The Last of Us, faced their most challenging acting test to yet. For Sunday's third episode of season two, Ramsey had to film an emotional scene that required them to step beyond of their comfort zone, and the most difficult parts weren't the stunts or action sequences.
Ramsey claims that the scene in the closet where Ellie sobs over Joel's (Pedro Pascal) clothing was the most difficult to film. The 21-year-old Emmy nominee admitted, "Oh God, that scene in the closet was the hardest [scene]." Ramsey disclosed that it has always been hard for them to cry when they should and that they rarely cry, even in private settings. Such unadulterated intensity was almost "virtually impossible" to perform in front of a full set and a team of observers.
Ramsey overcame the challenge in a different way by emphasizing their happiest moments with Pascal rather than dwelling on melancholy personal memories. “The thing that is always the saddest for me is remembering the happy things,” Ramsey revealed. They combined those joyful memories with Ellie's grief at Joel's death as they discussed their early days of working with Pascal, filming season one, and their shared laughter.
Ramsey also talked about the mixed emotions that surrounded their growing bond with Pascal, explaining how the knowledge that their time together was limited bolstered their intimacy. “We’ll be in each other’s lives forever, and we’ll be in each other’s hearts forever,” they told.
Taking over as the show's sole lead after Joel's death also
came with new responsibilities. In an effort to foster a friendly and positive
atmosphere on set, Ramsey took the position even though they had never
considered themselves to be a natural leader. “Everybody should know they’re
valued as a crewmember, as a cast member, and that we’re all equals,” they underlined.
