My wife Neha did not object to my gay character: Manoj Bajpayee

The fertile actor’s wife, Neha is undeterred about him playing a gay professor for the first time in Hansal Mehta’s next.

Manoj Bajpayee struggled to carve a niche for himself in Bollywood by playing unforgettable roles on screen, be it Bhiku Mhatre (Satya) that made him a household name or the latest CBI Officer Wasim Khan (Special 26). The resourceful actor is known to pull off any role with great aplomb. Considering that, Manoj is all set to push the envelope and challenge himself by playing a gay professor in Hansal Mehta’s (Citylights director) next untitled, something which he hasn’t attempted on screen before.

“Every character is challenging. But the gay character that I play in Hansal’s film is not going to be stereotypical. It’s about his life and what all he has to go through. The man is just an object. We will be giving our own interpretation to it. I’m learning Marathi for the character because he belongs to Maharashtra,” reveals Manoj.

On asking whether his actor-wife Neha had any reservation about the role, Manoj says, “She didn’t object to it,” adding, “We are very democratic in nature and are non-judgemental. We try to be very fair when it comes to analyzing the society.”

Will Manoj’s fans accept him in a gay avatar? “They will,” tells Manoj self-assuredly, “My fans made me survive 21 years in Mumbai. So they exactly know what to expect from Manoj Bajpayee.”
