Deepawali 2026: Significance, History, Legends, Puja Vidhi, Samagri, Mantras and Celebration Guide!

Happy Deepawali festival with Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ganesha, glowing diyas, rangoli and traditional decorations.

Introduction: What Is Deepawali?

Deepawali, popularly known as Diwali, is one of India's most celebrated festivals. Often called the Festival of Lights, it represents the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance and hope over despair.

The word Deepawali comes from two Sanskrit words: Deepa, meaning lamp, and Avali, meaning a row or series. Together, Deepawali means a row of lamps. On this auspicious occasion, homes, temples, streets and marketplaces glow with traditional earthen diyas, candles and decorative lights.

The festival is celebrated with devotion, enthusiasm and togetherness. Families clean and decorate their homes, create colourful rangolis, prepare traditional sweets, exchange gifts and worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha. In many regions, the celebrations continue for five days, beginning with Dhanteras and concluding with Bhai Dooj.

Deepawali is not simply a festival of lights and celebrations. It also reminds us to remove negativity from our lives, welcome positive thoughts, help others and begin a new chapter with hope and gratitude.

Significance of Deepawali

Deepawali carries religious, spiritual, cultural and social significance.

1. Victory of Good Over Evil

The festival celebrates the triumph of righteousness over wrongdoing. The return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana is one of the most popular stories associated with Diwali.

2. Victory of Light Over Darkness

Lighting a diya symbolises the removal of darkness and ignorance. It reminds us that even a small light can bring hope and positivity.

3. Worship of Goddess Lakshmi

Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped as the deity of wealth, prosperity, abundance and good fortune. Devotees pray for financial stability, happiness and well-being.

4. Worship of Lord Ganesha

Lord Ganesha represents wisdom, intelligence and the removal of obstacles. He is traditionally worshipped before Goddess Lakshmi during Diwali Puja.

5. New Beginnings and Prosperity

For many business communities, Diwali marks an important financial and spiritual beginning. New account books are traditionally opened, and prayers are offered for success in the coming year.

6. Family Unity and Togetherness

Deepawali brings families and friends together. Sharing sweets, exchanging gifts, visiting loved ones and offering prayers strengthen relationships and spread happiness.

History of Deepawali

Deepawali has ancient roots in the Indian subcontinent. Its history is connected with religious traditions, ancient texts, regional customs and harvest-season celebrations.

The festival is associated with several Hindu scriptures and mythological traditions. References to lamps, celebrations and Kartik-month observances appear in ancient Indian religious literature. Over centuries, Deepawali developed into a major festival celebrated in different ways across India.

Although the stories associated with Diwali vary by region, their central message remains similar: the triumph of truth, righteousness, knowledge and goodness.

Deepawali is also important to other Indian religious traditions. Jains observe the occasion as the Nirvana of Lord Mahavira, while Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas, associated with the release of Guru Hargobind Ji from imprisonment.

Famous Legends and Mythological Stories Behind Deepawali

1. Lord Rama's Return to Ayodhya

One of the most popular legends connects Deepawali with the Ramayana.

After spending 14 years in exile, Lord Rama defeated Ravana and returned to Ayodhya with Goddess Sita and Lord Lakshmana. The people of Ayodhya welcomed them by lighting rows of earthen lamps and decorating their homes.

The city illuminated with diyas to celebrate the return of their beloved king. This tradition is widely regarded as one of the reasons Diwali is celebrated as the Festival of Lights.

2. Lord Krishna's Victory Over Narakasura

In several parts of India, particularly in South Indian traditions, Deepawali is associated with Lord Krishna's victory over the demon Narakasura.

According to the legend, Narakasura had become cruel and oppressive. Lord Krishna defeated him and freed those held captive by the demon. This victory symbolises the destruction of evil and the restoration of righteousness.

The occasion is remembered through Naraka Chaturdashi, also known as Chhoti Diwali.

3. Goddess Lakshmi's Appearance

According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Lakshmi emerged during the Samudra Manthan, the churning of the cosmic ocean by the gods and demons.

She is worshipped as the goddess of wealth, prosperity, beauty and abundance. On Diwali night, devotees light lamps and pray for her blessings, believing that an illuminated and welcoming home represents purity and positivity.

4. Lord Vishnu and King Bali

Another tradition connects the festival with King Bali and Lord Vishnu's Vamana avatar.

According to the legend, Lord Vishnu took the form of a dwarf Brahmin and requested three steps of land from King Bali. With his first two steps, he covered the earth and heavens. Bali offered his own head for the third step.

In some western Indian traditions, Bali's return and the values of generosity and righteousness are remembered during the Diwali period.

5. Lord Mahavira Attains Nirvana

For the Jain community, Diwali commemorates the Nirvana of Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara, at Pavapuri.

The occasion is observed as a spiritual reminder of liberation, self-discipline and the path towards enlightenment.

6. Bandi Chhor Divas

For Sikhs, the Diwali period is associated with Bandi Chhor Divas, commemorating the release of Guru Hargobind Ji and other prisoners from Gwalior Fort.

The Golden Temple and other Sikh shrines are beautifully illuminated, and devotees celebrate with prayers and community gatherings.

Five Days of Deepawali Celebrations

Deepawali is traditionally celebrated over five main days, although local customs and calendars may vary.

Day 1 – Dhanteras: Dedicated to prosperity, health and well-being. Families worship Lord Dhanvantari and Goddess Lakshmi and traditionally purchase utensils, gold or other useful items.

Day 2 – Naraka Chaturdashi (Chhoti Diwali): Celebrates Lord Krishna's victory over Narakasura. Many families light lamps and follow traditional cleansing rituals.

Day 3 – Lakshmi Puja (Main Diwali): The principal celebration includes Lakshmi-Ganesha Puja, lighting diyas, decorating homes, sharing sweets and meeting family members.

Day 4 – Govardhan Puja / Annakut / Bali Pratipada: Observances differ across regions. Many devotees worship Lord Krishna and offer Annakut, a variety of food preparations.

Day 5 – Bhai Dooj: Celebrates the special relationship between brothers and sisters. Sisters perform a tilak ceremony and pray for their brothers' well-being.
